I agree. At first I was devastated by this news, but then I realized that this kind of stuff happens anyways and now I can even try making some money out of it. However, I will never ever ever buy and item for real cash. It's stupid and ruins the rewarding feeling of actually earning your equipment.

Apart from Blizzard blatantly legalizing something they previously explicitely prohibited ...

You might think that, but it add it up for a second here.

The situation is as follows: In diablo II items & gold were obtained by third party gold farmers & item sellers. They were, however, not in direct competition with eachother which allowed them to keep a stable price for their products.

If blizzard decides to legalize goldselling & item farmers (not through bots, but through "professionel" farmers), the direct effect on the AH is self explenatory. All the previously unrelated sellers will now face eachother in a free market auction house which will cause an enormous influx of gold & particular items on the market.
Because of direct competition with eachother now, the prices for f.e. gold will start to drop drastically.

See what happens here? The fact that the AH will be flooded with gold farmers gold combined with the fact that the price of gold will drop immensly, the chance of an individual player ever selling any gold (or particular item that is also cycled in item farmers offers), is nearly nothing.

Farmers will overrule the market by the principle of monopoly of the cheapest, and will continue to undercut every attempt that wants to outsell them.

Blizzard already mentioned they have no legal authority to act against human farmers selling their items in huge quantities since there are essentially players like the rest who "just play the game".
Even if they limit the amount of items 1 account can auction at once, they'll just start using a bunch of secondary accounts to sell with.
You can purchase items with real money on your Battle.net eBalance without ever investing real money in the game.

Take advantage of the limited free listings per week, put up some items, sell for real money, bam, you've got money on your eBalance. Now you can sell and buy even more items without putting in any money other than purchasing the game.

I can't wait for the RMAH.
interesting system may eventually appear in PoE)
I really like that Blizzard does this, and if they wouldn't do this then some websites would just do it instead. So it's a smart move of Blizzard to do this. They are really making the illegal (back in D2) to becoming legal now in D3.

In the beginning I will most likely just selling gear for gold or cash, but later on once I get to higher lvl or playing Hell, I might actually buy something every now & then.
"I'm in the beta AND the Diablo III beta? Well how about that. WAIT? I'M IN THE BETAS??? BOYA!"
Cool, now you can earn in the game:)
My Eng is bad, sry for that)

that is fabulous in theory, but for that to work you have to able to get something sold in the first place ...
This is a pretty damn good thing.
Personally I don't care if there is a RMAH, I wont be using it and I'm not a big fan of PvP in Diablo games so if Blizzard makes a few extra bucks from someone else that's fine with me.

I do like the normal, gold-based action house though. No more d2jsp or sitting in chat spamming in order to sell something.
