I vote no. Not that it means anything.

Actually, I like your idea, I just don't want this to become D2.1

I don't think adding Shrines or Shrine-like objects to the game would instantly make PoE D2.1.

Shrines were a GOOD IDEA. It is reasonable to employ good ideas.

Besides, if it isn't D2.1 now, shrines won't push it over the line.
"Bye" - Mr. Popo
Again, I actually like the idea, but where do we draw the line? D2 is a much loved game by a lot of us and PoE brings back the fond memories. That said, why can't it be a stand alone game? Just enjoy it the way it is?

I'm all for you making reasonable arguments (you are doing that, thank you) for something or against for making this game better. But does borrowing from another game actually do that?

I'm not against everything not PoE already, but I prefer ideas that are more original.

Considering game development and design is largely an iterative process in most regards, I fail to see how "borrowing" a game play feature from one game to expand and further this game is a bad thing?

Very little in PoE is truly original. It is, through and through, a product of iteration. The skill system in PoE is based on Final Fantasy's Sphere system. The game play in this game is based on games like Titan Quest and Diablo 2. Etc, etc. The innovation and novelty is in how GGG have meshed together the various systems they've "taken" (and iterated on).

Having something "like" D2 shrines in the game is a good idea, because the mechanical function is a good function and it sits well within the "ethos" that GGG are employing in the development of PoE. It is another layer of reward, another "carrot on a stick", and it's those sorts of mechanics that the game relies upon to be rewarding.

It shouldn't matter if it's been done before. What should matter is whether it will work as an element of Path of Exile. I think it will, and by the sounds of things you do to ;D
MOAR PANTS, because every good game needs a pointless meme.
Actually I gave this a lot of thought at work last night and I am going to post an In favor of post about it. Its a little winded, so will be a stand alone from this post. However, please pay attention to my argument when I do. Its more important than the idea. At least I think so.

But sorry to tease now. Just got back from 12 hours of running between our three buildings. I'm going to bed in five minutes when my spouse gets up for the day.
Maybe consider making a type of shrine, doesn't have to be a complete rip-off
I have a feeling shrines and a greater variety of traps and hazards will make their way into PoE sooner or later.
Would be great to see some shrines. Bonus XP, Bonus ES, HP Regen or something.
+1
Only shrine from D2 I miss is the monter shrine wich was really fun and added a twist.
But something similar is already suggested as
"Shrine of Exile" from here http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/45089
Wich is a really good idea :)
