High shadow resolution quality settings
" The pixellated look is how the shadows render, when you enable the high quality shadow option (Variable Shadow Mapping) it just blurs the low resolution shadows. It doesn't do anything to improve the quality, it tries to hide the low resolution shadow issue but is done poorly as you get massive aliasing/twitchy shadow edges when moving around. Someone else also pointed out that there are official videos from GGG that unintentionally display the issue in all it's glory too (Micro transaction vids). I was hoping the devs would have responded to this by now. I've done some texture/mesh/ini editing in my time and I know an adjustment to the game's overall shadow resolution on the highest settings would be very easy for the devs to implement. I say get to work on this guys! It would massively improve the overall aesthetic quality of the game!

Hey dev team, any ETA for this?
| |
The pixelation isn't as distracting indoor simply because it's generally darker and more detailed. While outdoor, it tends to be brighter and have more sunlight, etc. so it makes greater contrast, which makes things like aliasing much more obvious.
In other words, a dark shape against a darker shape will have it's flaws hidden while a dark shape against bright shape will have it's flaws highlighted. |

There's still no ETA for this. Its so ugly... please fix it!

I have settings on max and never even noticed this until I ran across this thread.
As a matter of fact I was running a character through the Rocky Climb today and was actually annoyed because there is a SHARPLY defined, thick zig-zag of light running through several of the shadows of higher ground areas, where there should be no light getting through. Anyway, I read this, and loaded up Act II's town, and yep, there it is. It... doesn't really look that bad. It's clearly a diffusion effect and yeah, it could look better with higher-quality shadow bases to work with, but I've honestly seen much worse effects on very recent, bigger budget games. I do agree it would be nice to see it improved, and that we should have heard some feedback by now, but keep in mind also that this IS a low-budget game and tweaking or even re-writing the shadow rendering engine is NOT something this game "needs greatly." It looks good ENOUGH and there are plenty of other things more needing of work. |

yep. I already replied to another post about this.
http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/31757/page/1/#p6420430 as the 2nd guy said, the shadows are a large part of this game's aesthetic. i just... the shadow resolution is YUCK. act 3 outdoor areas.... Fantastic level design was near ruined by the disgusting shadow resolution. standing still, its ugly, but moving around makes it even worse the shadows are highly prominent in this game, which is great, unfortunately that makes it all the worse when you reach an area where the resolution is low. i did take some screenshots, which i didn't bother to include. I can post them here if people want to see what im complaining about, but people have eyes right? load up the game and go to sarn encampment. you don't need to see my screenshots. |

" I would like to see them, just to make sure there isn't something wrong with your shadows. No longer works at GGG
