High shadow resolution quality settings
At the moment the games shadows render at an abysmal resolution making them extremely blocky when you use the Basic Shadow Mapping setting and the Variable Shadow Mapping setting just adds a blur filter over the top of the Basic Shadow Mapping and doesn't help at all when it comes to aliasing.
Please can we have a setting that allows us to greatly increase the shadow resolution (Lots of people have a computer that can handle it)? It would greatly reduce the aliasing of shadow edges whenever you move and will make the game significantly less annoying to look at while you are moving around. The problem is most notable in a lot of Act 3's out door areas but is apparent throughout the entire game. Here is a Low Resolution Shadows example without the Variance Shadow Mapping filter applied as all that does is blur the low quality shadows. in peak times it would cause serious issues, but i prefer to always play without shadows in any game, they're not neccessary in most,in this one it is..but still.
What you gonna offer next? somekind summon shadow of yourself gem?pf...
"What? how would this affect peak times? Shadows ain't generated by the server lmfao. Computer specifications:

So far I'm loving all aspects of the game, but the blocky shadows - specially in Act 3 outdoor areas - are way too ugly to ignore or bypass.
Actually its so ugly, compared to the other gfx assets of the game, that sometimes I choose to disable the shadows on settings. =/ There is any ETA to implement a higher resolution option for shadows? I might be wrong, but it really doesnt seems to be too complex to address. Thank you.
Totally agreed!
The game is gorgeous and consistent in all aspects of the visuals EXCEPT for the shadows that really stand out badly. Please add a higher quality shadow mapping setting to the game, it needs it greatly! Last edited by Merry_Blind#0906 on Feb 13, 2013, 1:58:10 AM

Also, weird enough, the shadows indoor are incredibly beautiful, so is most of the textures and overall lightning of the game.
When just coming out of a dungeon, the contrast is so big that I sometimes get confused whether the outdoor shadow is a feature or a bug. L O L I fail to understand how a sloppyness of this magnetude this is even possible considering the rest of the game which is visually gorgeous. +1 to fix this ASAP. |

I love the art and effects of this game, but i agree that higher resolution shadows for outdoors is very much needed and needed quickly. I vote to get this fixed as soon as you can devs! |

I am running the game at 1920x1080 on twin gtx 570s, variance shadow mapping, 4x AA, 16x aniso, textures on high. I've never seen shadows look like that. But I will say, I can see a little blotchiness when I zoom in close, but I guess I never really notice since I always play zoomed out.
I'm going to make an assumption based on my limited knowledge of 3D lighting and mod tweaking with Skyrim and say that it most likely has to do with the "Sun" lightsource and it's distance away from the game field. When you are indoors, light sources are much closer to objects that cast a shadow, so the result is a sharper shadow edge. The "sun" is so far away, there's a diffusion that occurs resulting in low res shadow edges. The only way to smooth it is to apply a sort of antialiasing effect to the rendered shadow. In Skyrim when you tweak shadows, the farther you increase your shadow distance, the fuzzier the edges get. Would love a developer to jump in here and let me know if I'm even remotely close. :D |
