I'm just not feeling the Windripper Bow

So the price of this bow has now fallen into the range of a possible purchase (from 40 Ex to the mid 20s now) and I was checking out the stats of the bow.

Windripper Stats

Windripper
Imperial Bow
Bow Physical Damage: 17–68
Elemental Damage: 40–60, 1–100
Critical Strike Chance: (9 to 10)%
Attacks per Second: (1.65 to 1.72)Requires Level 66, 212 Dex
Adds 40-60 Cold Damage
Adds 1-100 Lightning Damage
(10 to 15)% increased Attack Speed
(80 to 100)% increased Critical Strike Chance
25% increased Quantity of Items Dropped by Slain Frozen enemies
50% increased Rarity of Items Dropped by Slain Shocked enemies
It hunts; as silent as falling snow, as deadly as the tempest.

Anway my problem with the bow is it has relatively low DPS for an end-game bow (about 250 DPS average) and the increase to IIQ and IIR seems more of a gimmick than a feature.

For example, my ranger has over 10% chance to crit and I freeze white and blue monsters with cold damage from Hatred and my added cold damage gem, but I rarely if ever have seen a yellow monster or a level boss get frozen.
Problem is, the yellow monsters and the level bosses have the best drops in the game. So if they can't be frozen or shocked, what is the purpose of this bow??

Am I missing something or is this bow a dud??

On second thought, the more people who think it's junk, the better chances of me affording one, so yeah, it's totally a dud. :)

Quoted for truth !

It's a bow you need to build around it.Most crit ranger builds right now work well with any
phys/crit bow out there with the mirrored Harbinger being the best.
Voltaxic needs to be built around. If you put Voltaxic in a pure phys/crit char 9 out 10 times
it will suck.

There have been 1-2 builds already around Windripper.Fast attack + many auras = win.

I think it's a mistake from GGG making it an Imperial Bow also.
To crit or not to crit ?

Well the price has dropped about 15 Ex in a week so you should be able to afford one soon.

It should eventually drop down into the 2 Ex range when people begin to realize it is a specialized piece of gear.

If I find one I'm definitely selling it as fast as I can.

This bow is fucking amazing !!!!!

Beats Voltaxic or any other bow by MILES...

I'm running this on Invasion and with fairly cheap gear I'm getting 10K SPLIT ARROW in Lab with 62% crit chance precharges !!!
Are you freezing or shocking any yellows or bosses? And how are the drops?

Bosses aren't the point. It's a farming bow. You literally clear an entire screen of equal level blues in one Split Arrow.

It's an interesting social/economy study. I noticed it started around 40-50 ex in both Standard and Ambush leagues.

In Standard, where the orb farmers live and the economy is all fucked up, Windripper has actually gone up in price. Check PoE Goods. It's up to 70-100.

Whereas most people who play temporary leagues enjoy the sane economy and are more concerned with high life end game builds, killing Atziri, etc. Hence specialized gear like this being more affordable.

I'm tempted to reroll in Ambush. I'm sure it would take me less time and be more enjoyable to get to 82 on a new character than it would to farm 100 exalteds.

Farming blues has a very low percentage of a good drop compared to a rare or a boss. I don't have any numbers but I haven't seen a blue drop a unique in a very long time.

The 5% extra crit chance of the bow (10% base crit vs. 5%) to me just doesn't count for much. And the drop rate of the bow still seems a gimmick.

I think crit builds can have success with it, but if the drops aren't there, then any high crit rare bow can be used in the same build.

As far as starting a new character in Ambush, I would think long and hard about that if I were you. It has taken me a solid 3 weeks to get a character to L77 and it is frustrating at times to be grinding through lower levels as a broke character.

Not for farming uniques. Farming orbs in order to buy uniques. (Horribly boring, IMO, but such is the way of Standard league. Ugh.)

The attack speed and crit chance combo is ungodly. I'm currently playing a CoC build and have tried it with Quill Rain, a high crit Harbinger Bow and Lioneye's. All proc at approximately the same rate once you balance out crit chance vs. attack speed and hit chance, etc.

Lioneye's is actually the best so far because the high attack speed and 100% hit chance makes up for the low crit chance. Harbinger crits every hit but doesn't hit every time, and is much slower than an Imperial Bow. Quill Rain is the dumbest idea anyone has ever had due to the non existent base damage. Either of the above bows clears way faster and sustains mana way better.

Borrowed a friend's Windripper and it was like the best of both worlds. Plus the half physical/elemental damage keeps you from nuking yourself on reflects. Anyway, point is it's the best item in slot for a very specific build and a pretty good item for orb farmers. For "normal" play styles, not so much.

Edit: a quick run with my Lioneye's...

Windripper would give me 95% crit instead of 50% and the same attack speed.

Well thanks for clarifying the pros and cons of the bow. Explains what people are doing with it anyway. But for the price .... wow I just don't see it.
