FPS in Groups Unplayable
Love the game. However its next to impossible to play it as designed (in full groups). Solo the game is flawless, no problems. The moment I join a group and run with multiple players, the framerate slows to a slideshow, making it very difficult to play. I only play a ranged character in groups because of this. Running inbetween packs the framerate is playable. Its not my system, everything is running fine and current. I play other very similar mmo's with no problems.
Im at the point now where its either time to find a new game or just play solo (which gets old rather fast). I have tried all the suggestions on these forums ie- run as admin, turn off shadows, disable tessellation, etc. I have a dedicated amd video card with 1 gig memory and a very good quad proc. Have tried all new driver combos. In game video settings are all dumbed down as far as will allow. Im really at a loss. any and all suggestions are welcomed, at this point I am willing to try anything. I never have had a freeze/lockup/blue screen. It is limited only to very low framerates in groups. In town its around 55 and drops from there. In a full group it dips well into the single digits at times being a slideshow. Thank you all in advance for your suggestions/ tips. I run win7 64 bit with 8 gig ram. amd radeon hd 6750M 1 gig video card. Thank you |

It actually IS your system.
It's not the network latency, it's not the server. As you said it all works fine solo. The only time it starts a problem is with groups. And that's because of the way it does rendering. When more people come in, it causes more things to render. Each of them spamming skills means that there are even MORE things to render. It's a bottleneck in the rendering pipeline. The same thing can happen if you get multiple mobs on your screen that are all casting a lot of different effects (like if you get 3 groups of rare mobs on you at the same time. While it is definitely a game optimization issue, it's an issue with your system, not something outside of your local PC bubble. |

Thank you for your reply, but to a non tech like me it makes no sense. Why can I run a 25 man raid in wow on the same computer with ZERO framerate decrease. Yet a much smaller 6 person party is unplayable. For arguments sake, it is my system....what can I do to improve it then? The game options are next to useless. Disabled shadows, I wish there was a particle option we could throttle down. I read hundreds and hundreds of similar posts.....I find it hard to believe its our systems ( which run every other game we throw at it perfectly). I appreciate your input, however quite honestly I am growing tired of trying to get this game to run properly. As much as I enjoy it, its getting to the point where it simply isn't worth the effort.
Additionally I realize comparing POE to WOW is like comparing apples to oranges, however it goes back to my original thought....its the game (coding) and not my system. I realize its produced by a small company with a fraction of the resources and is a true free to play, however I would like to see some developer response input to all the obvious lag, framerate, desync problems. I welcome any and all suggestions to improve framerate. Thank you |

" Because they're totally separate games with totally separate graphics engines built by totally separate companies. On one hand, you have Blizzard/Activision... a multi-million dollar budget company (the company itself is probably in the billions). On the other hand, you have GGG, an indie game developer with Path of Exile being their first game. I'm sure how you can see how that would cause a difference in quality and resources. And when I say it's your system, what I mean is that it's nothing on GGG's end. It's not their network, or their servers, or anything else outside of the sphere that contains your PC. That isn't to say that there is anything you can do to fix it either. A lot of the problems come from GGG's optimization and engine. They just don't have the resources to optimize the game in a way that can make it run flawlessly in groups on a toaster like Blizzard does. Keep in mind that the 6-man groups work fine on a lot of PC configurations. A lot of that has to do with the hardware however. AMD cards in general are bad for Path of Exile... so if you have an AMD/ATI Radeon card, you're already at a disadvantage. In addition to that, it requires a lot of RAM, preferably an SSD or RAMDisk, and an awesome CPU. Sometimes then it can run without much issue (also if you've tuned your PC properly). For the vast majority of the "general population", this isn't the case, and 6-man groups can be difficult on those systems... especially depending on what classes the other characters are and what skills they use. You pulled my comment out of my other comments where I basically said what you did in your first paragraph. I know they are different games. If you read my original post, you would have seen it is an amd video card. You speak in general vague terms with no specific ideas on what I and many many people like me can do to try and improve the framerate in a party......like the game is designed to be played. I would gladly continue to support this game with purchases if there were some suggestions / comments from the CCC staff.
I will continue to experiment with changing the different option settings to try and achieve something with a playable framerate. The only other option is to play solo. I appreciate your responses, I don't want to sound ungrateful for any help...however its puzzling to me why so many people are experiencing the exact problems. I have no lag or latency issues, little desync problems (play totems to avoid any) , it is strictly a framerate issue when in a party. Thank you once again |

" AMD cards are crap with this game... I don't have one. I don't know any settings you can change to improve performance. It's well documented across this forum (since back in closed beta) that AMD cards are crap when it comes to PoE. Comparable nvidia cards perform much better. Not a lot of discussion has been done on specific improvements that can be done with them that I can remember. I'm sure there ARE threads out there with that information in it you can experiment with. I don't have them handy. You'll have to search for them. |

So......to sum it up, if your system uses an AMD video card you are out of luck. I find this hard to believe. I have tried everything I can think of with little to no improvement. The last thing I tried last night was to disable crossfire...so far this has improved the framerate a tad, making it borderline playable. Would love more suggestions as well as some input/comments from GGG concerning this issue. I know I am not alone here...spoke with many people that have either stopped playing or bought an Nvidea card.
Turning tessellation off slightly improved fps as well....I think, lol. When the fps is in single digits, its hard to tell really. I'll continue experimenting and play solo or in smaller groups for now. Thank you again |

POE is badly coded/optimized...period.
I am playing now besides POE...AION,Vindictus,Rift with hundreds of players around using skills at sieges and super uber ultra high graphic without any lag, ruberbanding or other things....but not POE :). They need a better graphic engine. Even from the login screen my gpu goes in 100% use...just lol. Play POE without sound, particles and the game becomes enjoyable.. Maybe in the next 2-3 years they will improve the graphic engine...maybe. |

Would be LOVELY if someone from GGG could provide some suggestions/comments. Does anyone know if its possible to disable all game sounds (its a longshot, but maybe will improve fps slightly). Any way to decrease graphic quality further (ie- ini file ) possible lower texture quality and/or particle effects. Love the game to death, but would love to be able to play in a group. Thank you

" GGG doesn't reply to most posts here as they're dealing with emails and private messages. Not sure they'd have any suggestions for you either. Your best bet is to scour the forum history and locate posts with AMD specifically. There have been a lot of discussions on it, but I don't recall any exact methods for improvements (besides tessellation). You can disable sound by using --nosound or -ns on your shortcut target (or launch options if you use Steam). It usually does have a slight improvement, but that's not specific to AMD cards. That's just in general. You can also manually edit the production_Config.ini file and change the texture_quality to a higher number. The higher the number, the worse the quality. 0 = high 1 = medium 2 or 3 = low 4 or 5 = really low 6 or 7 = clay? Last edited by Drakier#1520 on Apr 4, 2014, 2:04:45 PM
