Is anyone actually using Vaal Gems?

I just realized this today that souls needed go down as you level them.

I wonder if anyone else didn't read up like I didn't?

So Vaal Spark starts at 96 needed and at level 9 is down to 48. The difference is huge.

And the cool thing about Vaal Spark is the few seconds it lasts, it moves with you so you can clear a path with it. I wonder if duration can affect it?

In normal it takes 50% in cruel 75% and 100% in merciless. So youll need 96 in merciless.

Well not sure what the deal but before Dominus and my Spark def said 48 souls, while I was in docks. Now in Cruel it says 72 still at level 9. Ok, not as good especially in early stages not as many mobs. But I put faster projectiles on it, wow that was crazy meltdown of the archer guy in The Climb.
In normal it requires 50% of required souls, = 48/96. In cruel its 75% so 72/96 and in merc it'll need the full 96.

You know, like the post right above yours says.

@Topic

They seem geared towards fighting map bosses, since you only get to use them once per map most of the time.

If you have multiple vaal gems are the souls split between them, or does one kill give a charge to each gem?

I'm playing in ambush at the moment and it's pretty normal to use vaal gems 3-4 times per map. Some maps even let me use them 5 times.

Some vaal gems are just great(vaal siphon/molten/immortal call)... for the spell vaal gems I advise you link it to trap for the more damage and since it's easier to target enemies with it(it can even shoot the enemy from the inside letting all projectiles hit).

At the moment using vaal spark + lmp + trap + added lightning Easily clears rooms.

I've only really messed with two Vaal Gems, Cold Snap and Double Strike.

While an ice caster would get more damage out of Vaal Cold Snap, I've found the screen full of frozen ground to be quite useful on numerous occasions. To me, that is useful enough to keep it slotted.

Vaal Double Strike isn't bad. It does decent damage, but it doesn't last long. I'd like to see this get upgraded to allow multiple charges, but instead of being able to use it more than once, it increases the duration of your double. Perhaps each level above 1 adds another 25% to the duration, with L5 being the cap of 200% duration.
I use Vaal Ground Slam... its not that good, but its better than 1 attack from normal ground slam... so...
lvling a groundslam one, haven't used it yet

These are the gems I've tried to use more than two or three times.

Vaal Molten Shell is obvious.
Link it to life leech and concentrated effect and enjoy.

Vaal Burning Arrow is pretty good too.
Flying discharges that have a reasonable soul cost.

Vaal Cold Snap.
Useful on ambush at the very least, turns everything into when they jump out of a chest.

Vaal Fireball.
Fairly bland as a self cast ability, has the POTENTIAL to hit stationary enemies for the full circle if you throw a trap under them.
I haven't used it since the bug with multiple projectiles was resolved.
Vaal Cyclone + increased area + CoC + EK makes me giggle every time i ues it. It even pulls in pots and barrels lol.

Gotta be careful though. Sometimes EK doesn't proc and i get stuck in the middle of a million mobs. Nevertheless, Vaal gems are fun to play around with :D
