Is anyone actually using Vaal Gems?
I never see anyone use them and it tends to be too difficult to farm souls in 1 map to actually be able to use it.
At this point it feels like they were a worthless addition to the game. Are any of you guys actively using any vaal skill gems? If so which one and is it effective? How would you recommend they re work these gems to make them viable? My recommendation is to make it so spawned minions don't give you souls, normal minions give you 1 soul each, blue minions = 7 souls each, yellow minions = 25 souls each, Rogue exile or boss kill = 50 souls This would make building up souls faster and more consistant area to area. The logic would be that you are not only getting the soul of the individual monster, but also the souls of all those killed by the monsters. So tougher monsters should therefore have more souls. " I like using Vaal Burning Arrow and Vaal Spectral Arrow. Those are nice. As for the other ones; they take too many souls to use. There's actually a previous thread discussing their usefulness and changes that should be made already here in the forums: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/812361/page/1 |

I use burning arrow. It's ok not really powerful but I'm lacking it so we will see if it's worth it in the end.

I'm really impressed with everything about the patch that I've seen so far, except the vaal gems. I hope they will be rebalanced/reworked in future as the concept is great. That was literally the only thing about the patch that I didn't think was 100% awesome.

I found a Vaal lightning strike gem that didn't work at all due to missing a damage % mod. Quite bizarre. lol
Maybe they're intended to range from great to useless? Dunno. (I'd link it, but I threw it in the guild stash) |

I think souls should mirror flask charges gained, in that normal enemies give 1, magics give 3.5, rares 6 and uniques 11. I'd even argue that the souls should apply to all vaal gems, not just a randomly picked vaal skill. I think spawned enemies already do not grant souls.
Also, souls should persist between zones, but be lost on using a waypoint or portal. Much less restricting while still not being abusable. Even if the above isn't enough, then some skills should have the soul requirement looked at. There's definitely a lot of vaal skills currently that just do not weigh up to a 64 soul cost. Thing is... there's too little room for us to have it all, and these gems are not useful enough for space they take up on our equipment or skill bar.

While I haven't played a lot yet (up to level 36), I'm not liking the Vaal Gems.
- It takes TOO LONG before you can use it (and only once before recharging again!). - The output isn't devastating or useful enough. - It takes an additional hotkey slot Based on those reasons, I find it more of an annoyance than anything else. But then again I have only interacted wtih 2 vaal gems. I had hope it would have worked as an extension to the original gems. In the sense that the Vaal Gems can still be used even with no charges, operating like normal gems. Once it reaches a certain point, the next cast will release the vaal gem mechanic. |

I figured out the use when you are playing solo as I have been trying Vaal Spark.
You can carry the charge into a corrupted area you can unleash it there. Or if you are unsure about a chest, come back to it later once you are charged. In groups I don't know if only the killing blow gets credit, that would make it difficult to get charged up. I plan on experimenting with a couple, I think having just 3 on an unlinked piece would be nice on a caster to unleash all at once. But I'm nowhere close to the end, just hit docks normal.
