It's more, it lets you scrape by with shit gear if you can avoid getting wiped by things, you aren't the direct target.

Players are probably just running it because it seems that leech, spectral throw the other mainstay builds were shat on, and running a summoner will allow them to gain some currency etc.

Summoner is my fav class always, but I could see why players would want to run one at the start to get a foot-hold, then switch to something more preferable. Most players don't usually dig summoners, you can just scrape by is all.

Summoner is crazy OP with the right gear, but that gear is not cheap.

Not at all.
I have the gear too, but no, it's not.

Summoners advantage is you don't really need gear to get going. That's where it excels.

I run 8 auras, Shav, Prism, Midnight, Chayula, etc etc, and simple builds like Ground Slam Mara can run areas faster.

I even tried to match it with the snap shot, summoner doesn't compare to a 'player' played build. It just lets you get by without any gear etc. Good for a kick-start in a new league.

It IS however, probably teh best support class. You can be the aura-slave, have a meat-wall for dangerous map mods like reflect, etc.

You are using the wrong spectres/zombie set up/ snapshotting, then. My buddy can clear 77s and 78s while I AFK. The only annoying part is that shrine piety and academy boss WILL knock out some of his summons and it takes a while for him to get them all put together again, so gotta save boss for last.

summoner is op before super endgame because his price to gear/output ratio is nuts. you can solo 78 maps with 10 exalt worth of gear (not counting gems)
but if you can have all the best gear money can buy its not really that op in comparison.

You know if people keep complaining every season about the latest and greatest builds they will nerf every single one.

If your balance preference is to nerf the most popular thing then move into the next popular thing then it's not really balancing and more like going around in circles.

I'm sure people aren't a fan of blizzard style balancing.

Like literally from openbeta until now, path of xyz have changed so many times over to so many different things that I'm surprised that people don't catch on that GGG really actually listens when you complain to nerf shit.
