Is that a gun in your Pocket? PISTOLS
Let's think about this for a moment.
Since the people of wraeclast use bows, it's not a question whether they'd use or develop firearms, but rather can they develop them. The first and most important question: Does the world of wraeclast have explosives? If the answer is yes, firearms are not only plausible, but outright necessity. One could argue, that even without chemical explosives, a mage could just cast some explosive spells to launch projectiles. Although this is true, I believe it'd be much more efficient to directly cast an explosive spell at the target, rather than make it more complicated by trying to cast small explosions in a pistol or a rifle. Albeit I admit that cannons and sniper rifles being feasible with magic, the technology to make sniper rifles is far too complicated (requires rifling which was invented way too late). So cannons with magic? Sure, I could see it being done. Now let's take a look at some of the skills, if they have explosives. Explosive arrow - Magical poison that requires blood. I'm pretty sure requiring a liquid + poison (no idea what it's composition is) to fire a bullet is silly, but I could see bigger weapons, such as cannons be made with this technology. Blood cannons sound like something that fits the PoE lore. Other than cannons, though, it's highly inefficient to carry around packets of blood and poison. Fire trap - Not really an explosion per se. More along the lines of a firebomb, where the flames erupt from a container. So no firearms can be made with this technology. Smoke mine - The closest to a conventional explosive I can see in PoE. It could very well be a small black powder bomb, which if is the case, would mean firearms are a very real possibility in wraeclast. Nowhere in the skill description does it say it's magical, either. Outside of skills... I don't remember seeing anything about chemical explosives in wraeclast. So, GGG, how does smoke mine work? |

" Okay, just to make sure, are you referring to a member of this family? In an AU PoE heavily influenced by Shadowrun or The Red Star - itself an intriguing concept, by all means. Despite their interesting appearance, Calicos aren't that common in TV and movies; some appearances include: the 'alien weapons' in I Come in Peace; seaQuest DSV; Armitage III; and - in an example of Rule of Cool - in mini-gatling form in Deep Rising. As to the actual topic of this thread: I wouldn't be averse to the idea, provided it's presented in a manner which fits the lore. In the meantime, I can always boot up Torchlight 2 and have fun with pistols and shotguns... in an odd design decision, Runic made actual rifles (which existed in the first game) NPC-only weapons, something highlighted by the fact that a couple of the unique shotguns use a visual model clearly meant to be a scoped rifle. " I was wondering if anyone would catch that ref. Yup its an obscure brand for sure. And a mix of Shadowrun with PoE's Thaumaturgy in an ARPG is my wet dream. I first heard of calico's playing PnP Shadowrun. They were banned for a decade or so but now apparently the ban's been lifted. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calico_Light_Weapons_Systems ![]() ![]() Don't forget to drink your milk 👌 Last edited by TheWretch#7848 on Dec 16, 2014, 9:11:35 PM

Had a similar thought about pistol kind of weapon but seem to be a lot of people only want sword/axe/bow/wand/etc except firearm type of weapon...
Here is my suggestion http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1101639 Before reading the spoiler, I have to point out that. In my idea, they are not firing though gun powder but magic kind of stuff.
Spoiler
Before I start, I have to say I believe new class or new weapon category is possible and the chance is high. The reason is that a lot of people saying that GGG is planning to make Act 10...I don't know will there be 10 act but consider that one Act need 1 year (or more) to develop. I believe Act 5-6 is still possible (2-3 years).
With the current class/weapon/gem. I dont think adding new weapon/gen alone can interest people for another 2-3 years. So i believe GGG will make some big game changer in the next act or in the near future. ========================================================== --updated-- I can understand why some people dont want to see musket/pistol but I dont agree with these items dont fit into game. Based on those elements that already ingame , making a musket/pistol kind of weapon is possible. Maybe I am not clear in the OP is that they are not using gunpowder (thats the reason why i am using that image as it look like firing magic attack or some sort of magic attack.). This is what I thought. Firstly, Wand can do physical attack. Secondly, Bow can do elemental attack (iceshot, fire arrow, lightning arrow and etc) They didnt say how the arrow work ingame so I assume that the arrow head is some kind of metal that can attached mana and convert them into elemental attack. Which means converting the arrow head into a metal ball size object is possible. You can see the musket itself is a big wand which firing a metal ball size arrow head. Same go as the magic pistol. Musket shooter (magic caster? magic shooter? I am bad at naming) Not too sure where should this class fit but i think it will be around Witch. ![]() This class is mainly for the new weapon category. Magic Musket -2 hands weapon -shooting metal ball(physical damage) or magic shell (elemental damage). Magic pistol ![]() -1 hand weapon (can equip both hand) --shooting normal shell(physical damage) or magic shell (elemental damage). Gem
Spoiler
#1 Fire shell (For Magic pistol) -Shoot 2 fire shell to the target. -1 extra shell per 5 lv. #2 Ice shell (For Magic pistol) -Shoot 2 ice shell to the target. -1 extra shell per 5 lv. #3 Thunder shell (For Magic pistol) -Shoot 2 thunder shell to the target. -1 extra shell per 5 lv. #4 Chaos puncher (Magic Musket) -Cast a beam which deal chaos damage (e.g. lightning beam from Vaal Oversoul but the beam is much thinner.) #5 Lightning puncher (Magic Musket) -Cast a beam which deal lightning damage (e.g. lightning beam from Vaal Oversoul but the beam is much thinner.) Special Gem for Magic pistol
Spoiler
Linked two Magic pistol to active combination attack. Requirement -Need two magic pistol -Any two gem from #1-3 on each pistol -Place this special gem into one of the pistol and it will linked all 6 sockets (Technically speaking, this cannot give advantage as a normal 6 linked as the attack gem plus this special gem = 3 gem already. However, the outcome will be very similar to normal 6 linked.) Combination attack Condition: -The mana cost will be (gem 1 + gem 2) * 1.5 <- The 1.5 (150%) is just a random number off from my head. The base idea is just the mana cost wont be as easy as 1 + 1 = 2. -The dps would be (gem 1 + gem 2) * 0.8 <- Same as above, the 0.8 (80%) is just a random thought. It can go higher or lower. Lv20 Fire shell (Based stats) -Mana cost: 16 -Damage: 308–534 -Number of shell per attack: 6 Lv10 Ice shell (Based stats) -Mana cost: 10 -Damage: 138–224 -Number of shell per attack: 4 Assume the avg attack speed for both pistol is 1.6 Their combination attack -mana cost (16 + 10) * 1.5 = 39 Explosion Damage ((([308+ 138] + [534+ 224])/2) *1.6) *0.8 = 770.56dps Number of shells (6 + 4) /2 = 5 Bonus - Each shell have % chance to pierce. - Each shell have % chance to Ignite and Freeze the enemy. - % chance to cast X more shell ========================================================== Will keep on updating this idea if people is interested. I have read many arguments of both sides.
Personally, once you build your own universe with your own rules, I think you don't need arguments to explain the presence or absence of some objects. If it is done correctly, I don't see why you cannot implements new weapons, armours, technologies,... The only thing I'd ask to a developer if he does it, it is to be coherent with the whole universe. I would reject a Magnum in PoE but probably not a steampunk gun or a hybrid techno-magical gun Last edited by neoatomium#7372 on Dec 17, 2014, 12:24:57 PM
