" FFX+FFVI+D2=Path of Exile is one of the first things anyone familiar with all three games notices. What's not so easily explained is how the fuck GGG worked the three of them into one coherent system that is entirely its own. That's genius, by the way. When you can take separate elements and create something new out of them, when the whole *is* greater than the sum of the parts. After all, what is a pulley but some rope and a few wheels? What is a screw but a spiraling lever around a stick? This is how new things happen. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

Artists create, geniuses steal.
Final Fantasy in itself stole basically everything from Dragon Quest, so a big fuck you goes out to the OP for his subpar reasoning skills. Anyone remember Banjo Kazoiee? Banjo and the bird had like the EXACT same moveset like Mario did in SM64, but only a complete retard would say that Banjo Kazoiee is a carbon copy. BK is more about puzzles and SM64 is more about platforming. Two very similar games, yet they are completely different. |

No duh! lol. I don't have a problem with them paying homage to two of the very best customization systems(Sphere grid, Materia system) I've ever come across in video games.

Games are iterative. They build off of past success, add new twists, and (hopefully) improve.
Innovation is risky and can easily backfire. Games should add some, but developers should not attempt to completely reinvent the wheel. Path of Exile gives us a D2 style experiences and pulls from older RPGs that the developers enjoyed. The combination of the passive tree, gems, and hack and slash gameplay is something new even if the individual mechanics have been around. And they have made it work. Other than the server issues this weekend I have never had any major issues playing PoE. And I've been in the CB since late Summer 2011. Another perspective I have from this game comes from the fact that I enjoy deck building card games. Look at Ascension vs Dominion. They both use the same mechanic of play cards, discard your hand, draw new cards, shuffle when needed. But they are very different. I don't think most deck building fans would call Ascension a Dominion clone. Or since we are PC gamers, I don't think people that have played both would call Terraria a Minecraft clone. The one exception to this is when a game copies previous titles and does a worse job. These are games that are trying to take advantage of a popular niche (I guess a lot of people would accuse The War Z of this) to sell a title whether or not it is an improvement from older games. So instead of focusing where PoE mechanics were inspired, how about asking the more important question: Does the game improve on the titles you mentioned? In my opinion, this is the best ARPG I've played since D2: LoD. Is it better? I can't say since I haven't messed with the maps yet (my highest level was 68 and that was before they were added). And PoE free. FF10 was not. D2, D3, TL2 (even if the price was very reasonable) were not. The game can be repetitive and gives a bit of a monster slots feel in the luck department (I'm level 49 in A3 Cruel and still don't have an LMP or GMP gem). But all games in the ARPG genre have that. And the maps attempt to help with the repetitiveness. And it seems to balance the fine line of challenging me while still letting my character feel like a badass at times as I get better gear and complete my build. Mostly Path of Exile:

" I thought the same way till i saw what this guy linked in a reddit post a while ago. They look similar but that is were the comparison ends. The amount of thought it has taken to balance the passive tree in this game is amazing. |
