Newbie Witch: Fire, Lightning, or Cold?

I'm not exactly looking for a super build not even my duelist has 5 support gems on a skill, he's just using a 4 slotter with 2 actives and 2 supports. I just want to play fun and casually. Are you saying that I won't even be able to complete the game if I don't specialize and get a 6-slot piece of equipment?

Depends what do you consider completing, but you probably will if your build is good and you generally won't need a 6-link unless you use MF gems. It's just that you'll have a much, much harder time with some game sections than your duelist. Yes, killing mooks might even be somewhat easier, but when the game pins down on you, it presses hard.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Do not build an elemental damage character. You'll regret this decision and quit the game. It sucks. Oh god, it sucks.

Go Etherial Knifes, if you want a caster.
Gratitude for the replies, all.

You don't need a 6-link, no. You can survive fine on four (although some builds need five). Six is a luxury. And no, you don't need to use only one skill. But the viable multi-skill caster builds are much, much harder to play than the single-spell ones. Are you 100% set on using multiple spells?

Just the idea of having to choose, in advance, which skill and hence which element I want to specialize in just doesn't appeal to me. And the idea of only using one skill the entire game also sounds quite dull. All my other characters make use of 3-4 different skills. My Duelist uses Dual Strike, Flicker Strike, Cleave, and Cyclone depending on the situation. Though I am at a point where I have to choose which skills benefit from support gems, and so I had to leave Flicker Strike unsupported since I only use it for mobility. I suppose this what you meant by multiple skills being unviable. When does it catch up to me because right now I'm doing fine.

Is it possible to defer specializing until say, level 30 or 40, once I've had a chance to play with all the spells and find out which one is most my style? I'm not planning my skill build (that also sounds quite dull) and I'm avoiding the elemental damage nodes for now.
