Question on Levels/Stats
Hey there,
New to PoE today, and I must say, this is the game i've been waiting for! I can't believe I have not heard of this game until now. I've literally been searching for PoE for years. So I have been reading around PoE and have all the basic information. I have read that PoE has 3 sets of 'stats'; strength, intellegence and dexterity, and I have also read that the level cap is level 100. So, my question is, how are stats raised? I assume, and generally for most games (which I think is a shame) a character gains 'stats' according to his class upon gaining level or is given a set number of attribute points to add himself? Are these stats automatically added, or alternatively added by the player for that little extra individuality? A suggestion probably irrelevant, but interesting reading nonetheless: I would very much like to see a game use a very unique system whereby 'stats' were added/accumulated by the use of a particular weapon/skill and only on mobs which were appropriate to the level of that 'stat' and the player. For example, using a bow gains the player dexterity, on mobs with an amount of dexterity higher than the player, the player gains a dexterity decimal per # many kills and damage done in addition to experience points until he reaches the same as the mob, then he moves onto a higher mob. These could be given at the time, or upon level-up. Here, players have the individuality they have always sought, as each players 'stats' depend upon the difficulty of mobs they have been hunting. I would envisage that a death would cause the player to suffer a number of these stat points permanently, adding another angle onto PVP survival. Although, ambitious, I think this system would work perfectly with PoE, however I think i'm a little late to the table. By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail.

Attribute points are gained through adding points in the passive skill tree. Not much information has been released about it, as it's still under construction.

I'm not sure of the exact workings of the stat system, but it seems to me a possible working of it would be that a base character class will gain a certain amount of stat points every level on their own, and by investing in some passive skills, you could make it so you gain more of one of the skills per level.
This is about the only way I could think of that fit with the passives and the idea that a Marauder investing in intelligence wouldn't get as much of a bonus as investing in strength. So if it's the way I wrote above, it's a mix of the two systems you mentioned. As for the system you suggested.. While it does have a great idea behind it, I imagine implementing and balancing that system would be a pain. Currently, you gain stats by putting points into the passive skill tree (one point per level). Getting a passive skill that's aligned with your core attribute(s) will give a bigger increase to that attribute than getting a passive skill in a non-core attribute.
So the amount of increase you get is fixed but the player has the choice where to place his skill point. It's kind of difficult to describe. Forum Sheriff

@The idea originally posted : the way you described it I wouldn't like it at all since it would 'greatly' reduce the variety of both your gear choices and the hunting/questing spot choices, I can see so many disliking "having" to grind on same mobs with the same weapon to get the desired stat.
Look at darkfall online and how people macro for months to rise the skill levels by use of skills and those who cannot macro call the system broken (since rising skills "legitimately" not only takes years but is absolutely unenjoyable). |

" I too would hate this system, killing the same mobs over and over just to increase one stat seems pointless. The way they have it now is ok in my opinion. I have a question for the Alpha testers. Currently can you only gain stats through passive skills or do you gain stats per level as well? RIP Bolto

No, the only way you gain stat increases is through allocating skill points.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.

" You get 1 point only per level? Say you are playing as a marauder for each skill point would you get more for strength as the marauder is strength aligned? RIP Bolto

Yes, your understanding is correct.

Then, my question is, how does the game make one character of the same class different from another? Besides the obvious (items and gems).
By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail.
