Duping spree!
" I mean if every single individual item has it's own sort of "code" or something that the game could read, like a time stamp, or something just as unique that would allow the game to delete any extra/excess item that tried to exist on the server. |

Certainly a possibility... but how much are you willing to slow down the game to implement something that byzantine?

Not going to get into specifics for the sanctity of this thread, however - based on hearing GGG's talks about itemization, and comparing that to the way D3 decided to do their itemization(dupe and auto-identify prone) they work completely differently.
Also, just because a large company can't prevent it doesn't mean that a small one can't. When dealing with complex architectures such as game engines and online networking. Usually with big companies such as blizzard you'd have separate departments that would work on each aspect. Such as database engineering/administration, networking, game engine, etc. Whereas with GGG, one guy pretty much coded the entirety of the back end architecture and engine. Much easier to navigate something and solve/fix/detect issues when you've built something/manage something from the ground up rather than working on something that hundreds of people have their hands in. I'm sure all the system administration guys who've worked for both large and small companies can appreciate that example. Last edited by Elynole#2906 on Jan 22, 2013, 1:23:38 AM

Without going into too much detail, the duping in D3 was achieved by abusing the rollbacks provided by customer service by falsely claiming an account being "hacked". This also explains the quite small amount of duped items. If duping was as simple as in D2, there would be an absolutely insane amount of dupes (the AH would be filled with them).
So a question arises; if somebody would hack my account and steal my items, would GGG rollback my character or would they just say "tough luck"? |

" Great, now I'll be hearing the line "The sanctity of this thread has been fouled!" all day long. I hope you are happy, Ely :-D. And agreed - the fewer persons have built such a system, the easier it is for them to pinpoint potential weak spots. Seems it does have its advantages being a small company, aside from being cute. 12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human. Last edited by Avireyn#0756 on Jan 22, 2013, 2:25:43 AM
