Ranged attack totems should not require equipped bow
From my understanding, ranged attack totems (RAT) require an equipped bow before you can link it with arrow skills. This effectively limits arrow skills only to bow users.
The way I see it, RAT should be one way to allow use of arrow skills WITHOUT using bows. This will make them far more useful, and open up more totem possibilities. At current, RAT is underused by most classes. It should be logical that spell totems cast spells, and ranged attack totems fire arrows/other forms of ranged attacks. clearly spell totem is way overpowered in comparison to ranged totem but heard its getting nerfed so everything will be fine

" I'm not sure if you get my point. It's not about power comparison. It's about being able to use RAT with arrow skills, even if you do not equip a bow. I understand that some bow users will obviously be against this, with the argument that melee skills are not open to them in some form of a melee totem. To balance this, allow decoy totems to be linked with melee skills like ground slam/glacial hammer/sweep. Some damage balance will of course have to be in place, since decoy totems already serve another function (draw enemy fire). Last edited by Hayrich#0469 on Jan 20, 2013, 5:03:42 AM

" Or just add a Melee Attack Totem support gem and make it have the totem bounce or something so it can chase after mobs. IGN: Jerk, Princess

"That's not possible. A bow skill needs a bow - it deals damage based ont he bow used, so simply can't function without a bow. Totems are a way of modifying your skills - i.e. the skill the totem uses is your skill, and thus the only weapon it can possibly use is your weapon. If a ranged attack totem was allowed to use that skill, despite it being disabled for the weapon being wrong, it would deal your weapon's damage. Thus allowing you to deal 2h Axe damage at arrow range. The totem is not a separate thing doing it's own skills, it's a different way of using your skills. " Okay, fully understand that point. However, could we make so that RAT only checks for bow damage when it's set? That way you could set the totem with your bow out, switch weapons, then go melee if you so desired. (This is a better suggestion than OP's.) When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. That suggestion is amazing. Can you weapon-switch to use totems on the off-hand to begin with, though?
Right now I don't feel like I'd run a bow in the offhand if I were melee simply because it'd be too much investment to make practical. But I would love to be able to deploy, say, a poison-arrow totem. |

" Yes you can, but when you switch to your non bow weapons the totem stop firing arrows. I would like to be able to use a bow in my secondary slot purely for the ranged attack totem, I believe it makes sense that you must have the skill gems in your armour though. |
