A somewhat new player's review of Path of VexOhmIstDol
They'll figure it out when the player base tanks and it's just GGG left here. Oh, and the 30 children apologist circle-jerk they let insult everyone who dares suggest an improvement or point out something that needs work.
It's unfortunate. I think the gameplay is fun and the skill and passives system is better than some of you make it out to be but the whole thing falls apart around level 70. Then it's nothing but map grind and trading. And trading. And more trading. Using a trading system that's barely better than Diablo 1's. Too much MMORPG and not enough ARPG at end game. There's a reason subscription and player numbers on MMORPG's have been plummeting for years now. Most people are tired of the repetitive, grinding hamster wheels. Still, I really do hope new content and an improved trading or crafting system will appear soon. The game has a lot of promise and potential. Last edited by CassCE#6814 on Dec 18, 2013, 4:44:41 PM

New content should be coming in March or so, and I agree that I would love a better crafting system since I just plain dislike trading. I do love maps though I always have a blast with them when a character gets there. I've been super lucky lately though, I've had numerous recently drop 4+ maps, including a Vaults of Atziri that I got for the first time the other day.
I strongly disagree with the couple posts before this though, I haven't gotten bored at all since I started playing back in July 2012. Frustrated? Sure. Annoyed? Sure. But not bored. I've played a bunch of different builds, mainly classic types (summoner, fire witch, dual-sword wielder, ranger, spectral throw scion, etc). But to me, the tactics used in fighting with each different build and the gear you need to look for to make each work is a lot of fun. Sometimes getting to use different uniques is part of it. Heck, I recently started a Domination summoner because I bought the raise mummy mtx. I think it just boils down to personal preference. I don't mind running the same content over and over (well, in general, some of it pisses me off [looking at you imperial gardens and your fucking rain]) because I enjoy the different builds/gear/etc enough, and certain areas I really enjoy playing a lot. And I still want a nickel for everyone that says "PoE will die cus of blah". I want to buy more supporter packs. Support a free Hong Kong.

The thing about PoE is that it's an excellent game long enough for reviewers to give it a good score, but once you actually get to the meat and potatoes of doing the things that make PoE unique (mapping), you find out that it's a massive grinding slog that depends more on gear than anything else.
And also, I'd really like to understand the whole "we MUST keep the players playing OUR game, no matter what sort of skinner box mechanics we need to abuse to do so!" Why not go with the mindset "hey, they enjoyed our game for tens of hours and got through all our current content, no shame with them playing something else until our new act gets around--we have enough confidence that they'll return because our core gameplay is compelling enough"? |

It's like that in any games, players make the game live, and make the developers live also.
Plus PoE's appeal is not just clearing the content in normal difficulty .... it's far, far, far away from that, PoE is strongly built about character progression / builds. There are races also. SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.

" Of which massively sucks end game. That is a major complaint universal almost all players that have reached end game maps and played them extensively. Build diveristy in an end game map is almost non existent, typically your group consists of ranged spammers/totem users + one culling strike player. The only danger to such a group is a boss if they don't DPS hard enough, or silly shit like grapplers that have powerful crits, or double reflect, etc. And don't even talk about character progression towards end game, because it's almost non existent if you do not trade. |

I didn't talk about trading, I don't give a crap about it in this situation, I'm just talknig about character progression.
And there are plenty of build that can perform in end game, there is a good build diversity. You didn't even mention melees as they are they have the upper hand atm over other builds and are very strong .... SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.

" Melees only have the upper hand in leveling and early in the ladder. As the ladder progresses, ranged characters will massively outperform melee characters. The only melee character that can keep up is a Crit Dagger/Flicker strike character. Otherwise, any well built and well geared Bow character will just blow through end game with their eyes closed (basically anyone with a Lionseye Glare plus decent setup). This was true pretty much on every ladder, it's just everyone was crying about melee at first because GGG finally fixed some quality of life issues for a melee character. " Since you've been here since CB, you should know it's gotten better since they released more content. Remember when maps started at level 60 instead of 66? Higher level items and affixes have come out, better xp zones, and more ways to get passive points. There's no reason to think this trend will not continue as new acts get released. Personally, the highest I've played since CB is my 77 Scion in Domination. I've rerolled a bunch (and deleted a few of those), and played in Anarchy a lot. I'm happily mapping in the 68-69 range, because I still enjoy them, get decent xp, and don't give much of a shit about getting to the 78 maps. Keeping my mapping going has been pretty easy. If people can't wait for new content to be happy playing high-level characters, maybe it's time to reroll, or just take a break for a bit and come back later. Support a free Hong Kong.

" The vast majority of players that have been playing in early close beta will tell you that they disagree with this statement. Path of Exile has become less ARPG and more Korean Grinder MMO. |

It's interesting that you say that, because I've made that same essential statement numerous times, and you're the first person to disagree with it (and many have agreed).
The high end grind has gotten harder, because there's more lower level content to get instead (which is why in other places I've advocated or agreed with others who've advocated some sort of floor on affixes, such as ilvl - 50). But progressing to higher xp levels has gotten easier, and I've found dealing with maps easier, especially with recent changes. Support a free Hong Kong.
