If you want the absolute - top of the line - best of the best, the people who own it / crafted it know that they can charge a huge premium. Because they can. Because people will pay huge premiums to get the best. Just look at cars. Watches. Whatever.
If you are "poor" and have a mirror, just mirror the second best dagger/chest/wand/ring. The owner will be super happy for the free 1-5 exalteds you pay him in mirror fee.

The Mirror is the only currency with an absolute value in this game. It will always be worth the same as the best mirrorable items. Always.
You have to disregard items which are sold with a mirror premium - they are valued at mirror price + calculated mirror fee earnings.

Not exactly. The original item will always be worth vastly more than 1 mirror due to the ability of mirroring and potentially socket colors which is huge for 6 link chests.

As an item is mirrored enough time, the original item's value diminishes and is part of the reason why there is a fee attached. When an item is mirrored enough times and it is flowing freely through the economy its value will drop down a bit below 1 mirror. in time it will essentially become an ultra expensive 'unqiue' item.
