POE article on ign

IGN, a mainstream gamer news site, now has an article about the Path of Exile open beta. Despite the game being as popular as it is now, I'm sure there are a ton of people who have yet to hear of this game. Maybe people who uninstalled d3 a week after release and never went back to witness the poe spam threads. This is the kind of coverage that could help poe gain more attention. Sure we will get a few of the idiotic people who go to ign to see how good they think the next cod game is but they will filter out fast.

Hm, I am not sure if I am happy that the author will be 'playing for review' come 23rd.

On the one hand, it seems like the sensible decision, since factually, it's a soft start.
But on the other hand it's still a Beta, which means (and Chris and Jonathan said as much in their US tour) they will throw out a lot of new skills for our feedback, will reshape the balance of many things, and well, it will be a freaking BETA. That's why they don't call it launch or retail version but still Beta.

That's why I have a slight problem with people reviewing a Beta. Yeah, I know: It's often done in the industry because you always want to be the first to do a piece, and I am sure that PoE can use the exposure.

But I still don't like the practice of playing a Beta for review. Even if it does make sense. Well, maybe he will make it very clear in his review which version it is based on, and my fears are unfounded.

Anyhow, nice to see PoE get exposure from ign. It's not my favourite gaming place, but it does have a lot of traffic.

Now, that's some nice publicity :)
Take care out there.

This is also a difficult game to review. I don't know how much time a reviewer typically sinks into a game before delivering their verdict, but Path of Exile continues to actually get better as time goes on. Unfortunately, I would expect a lot of reviewers to give a sub-par rating even though the game deserves something higher. Then again, maybe I'm not giving the gaming journalists enough credit.
Nice,

There is nothing wrong with reviewing Beta, GGG actively pursued Krip to do just that so apparently they think that also.

Nice article! I was even surprised to see that the comments were mostly positive. Open beta here we come!

The way I see it is most people who see this game on ign won't play it or will only try it out for a short while. POE fits a certain niche of gaming and people who enjoy this style will try it out regardless of what the reviewer says. I'm pretty sure the reviewer will review the game as a full retail release regardless of the fact that beta is reinforced by GGG. That is just how the knuckleheads at IGN work. To me it is just exposing this game to those who are looking for this type of game.

Thoroughly depends on the game how much time is sunk into it and if the editor likes it. Maybe he thinks he got the gist after three hours and judges that he can see how the game will unfold from there. And of course how highly anticipated a title is. You cannot get away with a full review for, say, Dead Space 3 based on three hours time - even if it would be justified (don't know, haven't played it ;-)).
On the other end of the scale is an editor who may be personally invested in a game (does happen). They are likely to play it longer and sometimes even in their time off. I remember an staff member [non-print-editor] who was particularly taken with Chaser back in the day. He did not influence the score, but he vibed so much with fascination for the game that the review was extended from one page to three.

But as a rule of thumb: Most editors do not play games entirely before they have their verdict. It's not laziness, it's time constraints - everybody wants their review to be the first out. Take D3, for example. Some magazines revisited their initial review after they had had more time to spend on the game, and adjusted their score for the clusterfuck the game became in its later stages. But that is rare, and reserved for games with really, really much publicity. Where not doing it could cost them customers, and doing it could net them some.

Personally, I feel PoE will go over like TSW and receive verdicts around "~80% - for genre fans". I should be very positively surprised if it scores higher on average. Major gaming outlets are more for the average Joe gamer than for the hardcore following. And the very points we love about the game will likely be seen as 'unfriendly for newbies'.
That said, I find the very concept of tying the essence of a game to a single numerical value to be idiotic, quite frankly.

@deadcult: I know what you mean. That said: if they made it clear in their review that they're reviewing a Beta, I would not have a problem with it. I mean, the game is available to the public come 23rd, and not doing a review piece is -realistically- not an option.
