What about; locked difficulties till completing the previous one?!

If u want the hardest possible play, then decide that based on the league settings.

Normal/nightmare/hell or the PoE equals are not realy a change in the difficult lvl of the overall game. It is Harder for u to play yes, but only cuz the monster lvl is higher then befor.

Devs want u to progress through the game, not jump over to the next area just cuz u feel strong enough.
This aint an all open Sandbox game where u have all the freedom.

You aren't jumping to the next area though, you'd have to backtrack to areas you've already been to in order to play a harder difficulty.

It's not a sandbox experience at all... it's the exact opposite. Difficulty 2 is not a linear progression in the campaign from difficulty 1... changing difficulties is not a sandbox mechanism.

yes u are jumping into the next area (or several ahead)
U follow a path through the gamemodes and should finish one befor u enter the next one. Ur going forward if u jump onto nightmare and not backwards.

again, for a challange look at the league settings, and not on Normal/nightmare etc.
I can't believe this is still going. You're arguing over semantics and technicalities because you have absolutely no basis for the point you're arguing. Just drop it and let's move on.

It's not like this thread has any other purpose...

The game doesn't HAVE to enforce difficulty progression. All it needs to enforce is that you traverse the campaign in the right order, which will happen no matter what. The campaign itself is not coupled to the difficulty... only the story is, which is theoretically not furthered by changes in difficulty.

Here I'll write it for you. You think the game progression goes like:

act1difficulty1, a2d1, a3d1, a1d2, a2d2, a3d2, a1d3, etc.

However, that's just your preconceived notion, and there's no logical reason for that. The only requirement for contiguous gamplay is:

a1, a2, a3.

For whatever reason, you and others think that a1d2 must follow from a3d1, however there is little to nothing mandating that progression other than the argument "diablo did it."

My point is to say who cares if diablo did it... it's not mandatory and forces your first playthrough defined as a1...a3 to be done on a setting that some might find less than fulfilling.

You don't believe that... which is fine, you don't have to believe that, however it doesn't make your assertions that it's mandatory or that you skip content correct.

Difficulty in this instance denotes which character level range that the game is balanced toward. Not some arbitrary difficulty metric like in other games. Proper tactics can only take you so far in a game like this. You can't expect to take your level 1 character into the second difficulty setting and expect to survive because that difficulty is balanced toward much higher level characters. Perhaps you don't realize that arpgs don't require much skill to play and they downplay things like micro and tactics in favor of action (hence the name). How good you are is 90% dependent on what level your character is and what equipment he has, not your personal skill at repeatedly clicking on anything that moves.

So, you're saying you should be allowed to play Act 1 on normal, complete it, and if you want to, play Act 1 on "hard" or whatever?

Not sure why you would want to do that, but an easy way to do it would be to join a friend who has unlocked the next difficulty level, join his game, have him leave... and play.

Depends... in some games that's true. I played Diablo(1 or 2) for thousands of hours. I personally think that skill plays a fairly decent role in survivability and strategic success.

I suppose if that's possible, then why not just allow it right off :P

I do have a problem with people being able to skip acts though, which should not be possible.
