Test Server

The idea of having a server where we could test items/builds came about from the lack of being able to test anything endgame without spending months if not years on a character, or even something as simple as testing gem interactions for new builds. You could even go as far as testing bosses damage rolls safely for hardcore players that are to scared to get hit by specific spells, not knowing if it will be their undoing.

To be more specific, what i had in mind was a different gateway you could log into, and create a base level 100 character, with all the skill books already built in and a choice of bandit rewards. Then change the vendors in towns to sell 4 and 6 linked high base level items, sell all currency to be able to roll gear, all of the skill/support gems and of course adding all the unique items in.

For the testing itself, i'd suggest having maps as the system, so yet again implement a vendor selling every map available, even the uniques. This would allow you to see the map modifications that your build may struggle with, or simply cannot do. While also providing testing of the actual bosses which hardcore players would value.

I understand that this is something you have probably not already implemented as half the point of playing this game is to find out as you go, how the theory-crafted build adapts and changes. However i find it plain silly to spend months trying to grind myself to items that then do not work as i had envisioned, this could go for certain uniques or even just finally finding a 6 link. This would allow players to have a much more realistic idea of how the build would work and allow them to optimize it even further while it progresses to the endgame.

End of the day this would provide new players with a more solid grasp of the game, veterans with convenience and elitists with more in-game testing to play with. I really don't foresee any problems other than the hours it would take to implement, which is something i'm sure you guys at GGG would spend if it made your game better.

What a constructive post.

Anyways, I would kill for something akin to this; I've created several characters which just brickwalled because the ideas I had just didn't pan out the way I wanted them to (cough lightning warp cough).
God mode league... I don't think I like the suggestion.
Must be one of the most xxxxxxx stupid sugg. ever..
Why not give everybody a handbook+walkthrough at the same time..jees..
The goddamn idea is the challenge+to discover unrevealed things/skills/builds/and so forth..
This is all against everything about gaming..tell me you are a major famous troll ............

Another amazingly constructive post, which also seems to completely miss the point of this suggestion.

The suggestion is to open up a playground for people who like to be able to test theoretical builds. I understand this isn't for everyone, as it seems people like to follow whatever the current trend is (spectral throw, or whatever kripp is doing). There was NEVER a suggestion of creating an entire league.

I could imagine having maybe a small starting area with some vendors for basic linked gear, then leading up to an area with a few monsters and then a boss e.g. Piety. Nothing would drop, of course, since that would completely ruin the purpose of just testing out if things actually work as you wanted them to.

If you're trying to say the idea of the game is to discover new concepts, this further helps towards that. Albeit to much less exclusive level, which in my opinion is a good thing, half of the people in this game cannot test anything themselves so they see a build on stream (use Kripp as an example here,) and they copy that, instead of being able to play something that they designed or thought about.

It's not like you would gain anything out of this other than the knowledge, you're acting as if it impacts current leagues and makes the game a walkover. Also you would still have to acquire all the items you would have tested with in the normal game, but you would rest assured you were working towards something you had tested and worked, instead of a theory.

An environment like this is nice in theory but it'd defeat the purpose of testing the build in a real environment. The economy of the server you play on often makes or breaks a skill build because I'd hazard to guess the vast majority of builds rely on gear which is crafted or unique, of which requires currency that was earned/traded in that economy.

The act of testing is to be grueling, time sunk and countless failures may await but that's what makes the game so captivating. Hence adding a sandbox like this would give no advantage.

If you enjoy the anguish of finding out after months of playing that what you had envisioned doesn't work, then that is up to you.

However people who haven't got that much time to use, would be able to play a really great game with some sense of assurance that they aren't running a build which will inevitably fail.

I'm not totally averted to the idea however I feel it is unnecessary. Don't concern yourself with the fallacy of sunk cost and rather enjoy the nature that is trial and error.
