Best type of defense?

Aegis aurora block builds dwarf everything in terms of survivability.

Throw in stone of lazwar, rainbowstrides, and templar spell block node and you become a fortress. I'm talking literally going AFK vs some things that would destroy most players.

Best defense in order of effectiveness:
1. Damage. If you can kill it before it attacks, you don't need any survivability.

2. Utility. Freeze Mine + Added Cold Damage + Cold Penetration = Enemies don't move. If they can't attack you, you don't take damage. Disabling abilities like Enfeeble, Temporal Chains, Conversion Trap, and so on are priceless. This can also include a Rejuvenation Totem, Decoy Totem, Shockwave Totem, Summon Skeletons, Summon Zombies, and more.

3. Evasion. Not only do you take no damage against attacks, you can double its effectiveness with a single point: Ondar's Guile.

4. Armor. You simply take less damage and because you take less damage you are stunned fewer times and for a shorter duration.

5. Deep hit point pool. You can take quite a few hits. This is better than large amounts of recovery since a single shot can put a shallower hit point character down.

6. Fast recovery. This can be anything from literal recovery speed from stun, chill, freeze, and such, to anything like regeneration and leeching. If you can recover more than you lose, you're golden.

1# 5.
2# 6.
3# 3./4.
4# 2.
5# 1.

Assuming we´re talking about every kind of mob and not only whites. Last point though is a conjunction though with 2# depending on how much you rely ond LL and GR etc etc

I was speaking in general. Of course the priorities would change depending on the enemy.

As to point two, it's mostly against the majority of enemies you face and not very useful against tougher opponents. That much should be obvious.

However, it's second because massive amounts of enemies tend to be harder to deal with than single bosses. Those bosses always do the same things over and over and you can prepare for them, but you can't be prepared for three magic mobs, two rares, and a rogue exile all at the same time. This can overwhelm some builds every time, and be problematic for many others.
One thing forgotten in that list though is capping, cap breaking and overcapping resists. Having 120%+ resists capped down to 87% makes an immense difference in survivability.
Avoiding monster attacks so that no damage calculation roll is even required.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.
Block best defence in game by fare
+1 block rules
hybrid AR/EV + shield (block nodes investment not necessary) --> very efficient, but expensive, gear dependent
max block + armor --> very efficient, relatively cheap

ES based build with high block + aegis aurora, then choose whatever you like, EVA/Armor/Hybrid, just use a few end_charges + granite/jadeflasks, then you also get ghost reaver etc + blind/enfeeble

evoila tankiest build there is (need Ci though or shav, well whatever can even go hybrid life/ES)

In my opinion

is usless without armour.

Ya sure, should have been more correctly on that. You can´t go full evasion. My bad. But what do you say about that woman trying to eat strawberry cake? :)

ALSO

do you think my thesis is correct or have a better "tanky" build? Just curious. :)

I have no idea..

And yeah, i'n my opinion a high EHP block build using aegis (aegis basically adds a secondary scale able block) is the most tanky build now.
