so angry right now (random RIP in Nemesis)

thanks for the tips guys, but here's the thing: I do most of what you suggested already.
have done so since Open Beta.
I may have actually suggested some to you, if you ever posted in the Tech Support sub-forum :)

that includes deleting both the minimap and shader caches, defragmenting the ggpk with Zoxc's wonderful tool, pack checks, and of course overall PC maintenance.

my system is indeed rather old, but it runs PoE good enough most of the time, though on medium settings (edited the settings file manually).

the problem is with loading some very specific areas, and from what I read, I'm not the only one having problems with them.

my proposed solution (invlun until player action) can indeed be exploited, especially by multiboxers.
but I think it's time GGG think about the 99% who don't cheat, instead of the 1% who do.

Did anyone tell you to "adapt" yet? That seems to be the common response around here.

Why people don't alt-F4 after it takes 30s+ to load a zone baffles me. There's no shame in that, and nothing GGG can really do to fix it short of shooting your ISP/computer in the face.

I just tried it actually, just to test. in Domination but that doesn't matter.
hit Alt+F4 when the loading screen showed up.
nothing.
it logged me out when the area loaded client-side, and not a second sooner.

so I guess I couldn't Alt+F4-avoid this RIP, even if I wanted to.

barracks seems to take longer to load than any other map

Barracks also lets mobs spawn incredibly close to the waypoint. It's not the only map, but it's freakin' stupid. Mobs shouldn't be allowed to spawn that close to the way point. They should be well out of aggro range to prevent this kind of stupidity.

Ah..but OP strictly said this happened loading from sewers not from wp. No mobs ever spawn close to it

it was quite the opposite for me: I never got ambushed loading Barracks first time (in a session) from the Waypoint, but died a couple of times loading from Sewers like this in SC, and now it happened in HC too.
perhaps I was a bit naive, given the fact my last such loading screen death in Barracks, happened in Beta (before 1.0).

That sounds like it's definitely a computer issue. From my experience you drop out of an instance <1 second after the client is no longer receiving info from your computer, "safe" or not. Maybe you should just yank your ethernet cord instead.

I won't do that.

here's a fun fact though: the last time I remember actually yanking a cord, was in Diablo 1 :)
though I don't remember if it was an Ethernet Cord, or a Phone one.

I actually did that a lot back then, especially in games like Doom (and later Hexen/Heretic) and Starcraft.

what happened? loading screen. Barracks. 2 Blackguards standing right outside the Sewer exit ambushed me while the damn zone was loading.
area finally loads, and I see a resurrect button.
game didn't even have the dignity to let me press it - client crashed to log-in screen immediately, to add insult to injury.

Im going to call bullshit on that !

you have 20 sec of not taking dmg when loading and I have never seen any mobs doing this or being at the waypoint...

most of my HC/Onslaught/Nemesis deaths are due to my errors, but every now and then comes a client crash or loading screen death like this, to give me a completely random "fuck you".

I don't know if I should continue with the build now, and quite frankly I'm just beyond frustrated.

this is unbelievable.
I'm seriously thinking about stopping playing Hardcore in this game.

EDITS:

suggestion to solve this issue

ideally, these things should not be happening in a released game.
but they do, and I have a suggestion: replace the invulnerability timer, with an invulnerability while idle.
meaning, the character is invulnerable when entering a zone, until the user performs an action (movement, attack, flasks or any other input).
no timer.

@SC guys

I'm an SC guy already :)
my highest level chars are in SC, and they outnumber my HC ones.
I know about the parties and Portal gems, and Cast On Death :P

I just like to play both, but maybe HC was a mistake.
if it was, it sure as hell took me a long time to realize that.

Yep. One of the main reasons I dont play HC in this game anymore. I still have a mid level witch in the 60s, but I just stopped playing her. My first one this league died to desync, and I rerolled the 2nd one to 60s and just said ah screw it and went to Domination with my friend.

Screw dying to retarded stuff. I can honestly say, most of hte times I have ever lost a HC character is has been to some sort of desync or stupidity. There was maybe 1 or 2 that died at my own personal fault, the but others were desync deaths and why I hate it so much.

SC is more fun anyways. Get a guy up to 79-80, stop caring about leveling, get you a cast on death portal gem, magic find, and spawn rape Dominus or Piety with crit flasks 24/7 and make bank.

Map endgame is terrible, you run out, dont find anything, not exactly fun; desync kills you off and ruins your day even in SC when you die 1-2 times and lose an entire day worth of XP or more, so why not just say YOLO and abuse the shit out of whatever mechanic you can and have fun. Life is far mroe enjoyable when you desync into a wall and die and a portal pops up letting you hammer down towards the boss room with 200% magic find like nothing happened.
I never had these loading / zonning issues. Zones load quite fast, even tho the initial boot of the game takes ages. It's strange that you were attacked at sewers exit, because mobs are usually quite far away.

I feel you. Dying to technical issues feels like crap. I'm done with HC in this game, played it for the most part since I'm here. Had really a blast in Nemesis playing self-found, fought Dominus without trying it before on SC, got to 67, but then I died due to desynced Merci Vaal (got blasted away while on my screen he was still raising the hand), even tho I'm constantly spaming /oos while playing... Feels disheartening and futile.

Oh, well, back to Scrub, with all the yolo funky builds!

That cheating 1% would very rapidly ruin the game for the rest 99%.

It's like the pregnancy test you do at home, it can't give a positive false but it can give a negative false. It would be a bigger seizure to let a woman know she's pregnant when she isn't rather than it is the other way around. In PoE it would be bigger issue to let cheaters cheat than let the non-cheaters have a flawless gameplay.

By the way
No, I never did a pregnancy test.
