You don't lose your entire steam account. You lose your new PoE account that you created through steam (if you even did this).

EX:
- You were playing poe last year and have a level 50 witch and a level 10 duelist.
- You stopped playing, downloaded it from steam, and didn't link your account to your old account with the 2 chars.
- You make one new char since you have none in this new "steam" account, and get to level 20.
- Later, you decide to link your steam account to your old PoE account.

Result : You log in, your level 50 and level 10 are there, but your 20 isn't.

I learned the hard way :P Shoulda just linked from day one.

Yeah reporting in as lost my PoE progress on steam, including microtransactions. Emailed support, hoping that I at least get the 200 points re-credited to me. Don't really care about the lost toons, but the currency loss suuuuucked.

I should have made an account day 1 [2]. Not blaming GGG really, it was my own fuck up I'm pretty sure. I got impatient waiting for the validation emails, and I think something happened between that and me trying to sign in/validate steam sync.
