The ranger makes comments in regards to merveil that would suggest that she at least identifies as female. Whether or not she was born biologically female, no one can say.
If anything, the game suggests that she is not hetero. That's as much as we've gotten so far. IGN: Iolar

The ranger's gender was never the issue.
Her taste in gender is another story. But given how horrified some of our forum members have been to discover Maligaro had a male lover, I dare say no more. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I just assumed since they were the more agile and fragile characters in terms of play style nodes, so it was fitting to be a woman.

Ranger is my favorite character because of this, i always played Leo in Dead or Alive and whatnot. Its called androgyny and its great.
