Looks like there's some new players headed to Wraeclast by the looks of the comments. GGG fully deserve this praise.

I'm pretty skeptical of mainstream reviews, and didn't think that the commercial press would actually appreciate a gem of a game like PoE, but I'm thrilled that Gamespot disappointed me! 9/10 is great, and very much deserved.

" I used to work for the biggest Nintendo website in europe, amongst other websites. I was never once told to score a game like this or take an attitude like that, because of outside influences. Sure press officers like to be sweet as pie, but that was pretty easy to ignore. I even slated the original Devil May Cry, in contradiction of most other sites, but Capcom never gave me bad favour for this. Although that isn't to say, that a site such as IGN might be swayed by a big dollar payout from a powerhouse like Microsft or EA. Generally though, I think even mainstream sites need to keep their credibility and integrity in order to sustain their readership, which is a continuous source of money. Other sites *cough* eurogamer, just sometimes don't do their job properly. Return to this flameless sunder

" To be fair, the latest CoD sucks, even by CoD standards. :) Nonetheless, congratulations on this awesome review! A well deserved grade as well. " Actually, I've never been in the "they take bribes!" camp. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, I worked as a reviewer and gaming journalist for a number of German print publications, and there was never any pressure to review a bad product positively. While there may be exceptions, I don't think sites are actually getting paid off. (There may be some psychological considerations and such, and a desire to get exclusive materials.) The reason why I don't expect much from the commercial e-press is that many sites seem to be more about hits and appealing to the audience than reviewing all games by the same standards. The quality of commercial reviews is often inconsistent and the reader is better off finding a reviewer they agree with than focusing on a particular site (personally, I like all of Tom Chick's stuff, but he's also controversial). My concern with Gamespot and PoE was that they might downrate the game because of its hardcore and old school elements. I'm glad they didn't and saw it for what it is: the victorious heir to the D2 throne. | |
