Gem leveling... why is it so slow?

I just noticed that my core skills for my build which I have been using since around level 20 have JUST reached level 57 requirement.... and I am level 68.

I've also had a fireball gem equipped for the past couple of levels because I wanted to try using it instead of arc, and it is at a level 49 requirement.

Is there a particular reason that it is so difficult to level up gems? I'm not really sure if I'm doing something wrong, but it's not like I've never died and lost experience, so I dont understand why my gems should be so far behind me in level. They were keeping up just fine earlier on.

the thing is by lvl 60 your gems usually are lvl 14-15 (of the top of my head).

this leaves 40 player levels for the gems to reach lvl 20 which has to take its time considering noone had a lvl 20 gem yet (afaik).

then again i dont know why the lvl requirement of the gems doesnt increase at the same speed as you level like it is for player lvl 1-50.

Unavailable

There are lots of level 20 gems out there.

Its slow because gems only get 10% of your exp.
Some items in this post are currently unavailable.
ok never mind me then.
has been too much time since i have been in merciless i guess ^^

still i´m wondering why the max lvl requirement is so low.
so its better to give gems you want to level your best toon concerning gaining exp instead of keeping them by your actual char.

But then why were my gems consistently outleveling me for so long?

It sounds like you are doing much lower or much higher level mobs.

Gems get 10% of exp you get before your exp penalty.

So say you are level 70 in a level 54 area. When you kill a mob, you getting 11.4% exp of that mob out of 100. So say each mob in that 54 area is worth 1000exp. You would be getting 114exp on your toon and your gem will get 100exp per mob.

Gems need less per level than you do at that level.

I believe it could also be the player was dying alot and losing xp while gems don't lose xp(Right?) Think of that time where you maybe died 10+ times trying to kill vaal too early.

I still dont understand how that would cause my gems to lag 10 levels behind me. I'm leveling up wherever I can, since running level 65 maps repeatedly to level up to 66 is simply not sustainable.

Regardless of what level mobs I'm fighting, if I'm able to level up, shouldnt my gems be able to as well?

When you pick a gem up about as soon as you can equip it, it levels along just fine (even tends to overlevel most of the time). If you're well above the required level, it's going to lag behind consistently. If GGG were to reduce the experience needed to level a gem, they're that much more prone to outleveling the player.

Stuff becomes quite silly once you get to high gem levels anyways (edit: "though", not "anyways", damnit):
That linked EK gem (top right in the helmet) needs almost 70 million experience to level to 20. It gets 10% Exp from kills. You need to kill 700 million (unmodified) exp worth of enemies. For comparision's sake: to go from 59 to 60, you need around 15 million exp.
Oh also; that gem is already halfway to leveling.

You have it the wrong way around. If you are leveling up in areas where you getting 100% exp. Your gems will lag behind, if you are leveling up in areas where you are getting less than 100% exp (like much to high, or much to low) your gems will level up faster than you.

To the OP. If you want to catch your gems up, you can go back and kill lower level mobs, or find areas which are much higher level than you are. In races, your gems will tend to be ready to level up before you are because you likely underleveled for the areas you are farming.
