Orb of Stripping

Perhaps: Source item is destroyed; attempts to apply one randomly-chosen property from the source item onto the target item. Both source and target items must be rare. If application of the randomly-chosen mod fails for any reason (ie: there's already a mod in that group on the target item, or the target already has 3 suffixes / 3 prefixes, or that mod can't spawn on the target item) the stripping orb malfunctions and behaves exactly as an exalted orb. Mirrored items cannot be sources.

Handling the collision case (the orb chose a mod it can't apply) in any other way invites some form of abuse or another.

Most direct use of this would be to alter a blue item until your desired property shows up, then regal. If the new source item has 3 desirable properties including your most desirable property, strip from this template onto the item you're building. You now are adding from a self-fixed affix pool. Although that "fixing" process was very expensive and took a long time.

+ Gives crafting the final few properties onto a godly rare a slight measure of control, while adding a great deal of cost and a long grind to the process.
+ Maintains randomness. There are still no guarantees, all you're doing is improving your odds at the mod you wanted.
+ Adds another (much needed) sink for regal orbs.

I really like this idea. Please tell me what you think.

GGG will never add an orb that lets you directly choose a new mod to add to a rare. This I think is the closest we could get.

This is much better then my original idea.
High cost, but determinable progress is always better than pure chance.
That's why runewords were so awesome.

Isn't a "no" better than an ignore?
...I was hoping for strippers...

It might be interesting to have orbs that gave specific prefixes or suffixes to magic items only...

Sort of like Orb of Augmentation++, but if it's a suffix kind it can't be used with a magic item that already has a suffix, and same with prefixes. Of course, this orb would not go beyond the 1 suffix, 1 prefix limit of magic items.
