Why are Alchemy Orbs devalued?
|
I'm curious why Alchemy Orbs are valued where they are. In Standard they seem to go for about 1/2 of a Fuse, and similar in other leagues as far as I can tell (although I only actively trade on Standard.)
Obviously, this is not due to being able to buy them from Vendors since it costs 8 Fuse to buy 1 Alch. It also doesn't feel like it's due to drop rates - I've played enough that it would be astronomical odds that I wouldn't notice that Alchemy drops twice as much as Fuse. If anything I feel like they drop less. Even with the Alchs I get from collecting shards, it seems like it's roughly equal. The Alch vendor recipe is also kind of annoying to do and questionable value since you have to spend quite a few Scraps / Whetstones to get them. So why is it that Alchemy is worth so little, considering it's not particularly easy to get them in bulk? |

I have to admit, I really do not understand the economy in PoE. I would say it's because of supply/demand, however I don't think that's the case. Just like not too long ago in Anarchy 1 exalt was worth 50 chaos orbs, now it's down to 30 chaos orbs. I feel like there is market manipulation by the wealthiest players to suit their own particular demands, but who knows. Maybe the Rothschild family has something to do with it :p

I asked a very similar question, but it was regarding chance orbs.
" Sellers tend to value alchs at 3:1 or 2:1 chaos, whereas buyer value them at 4:1. Personally, I think they're crap, so I avoid them in any currency exchange. |

Fusing's get used in the 1000's, they're one of the currency items that actually get used for crafting, which makes them more useful then alchs.
Alchs only get used in conjunction with scouring orbs or once per item before chaos take over. So although they aren't easy to get they don't get used much at all. The reason it isn't two alchs per chaos and two scours per chaos is scour aren't that common. |

It doesn't help their value that alch orbs stack in 10s, so they take up lots of stash space. Much easier to just use chaos than scour/alch.

I feel like this is a product of demand. Way, way, way way way more fusing get used every day than alchs, and all types of players need to fuse. Personally, I only trade alchs at a 2:1 chaos ratio, 1:1 fuse; though I currently play Anarchy so I can't really speak to the economy of Standard.

My buddy and I have been scratching our heads over this too. 100-120 alchs to an exalt is insane. Chances are you can alch 120 high level items and find 1 worth an exalt. There's also the fact that alchs are used for mapping so people will always need them.
I get the feeling that RMT has a large influence on the economy as the most popular (at least the first choice on google) currency exchange rate website is owned by an RMT site. It would make sense for bots to be flushed with alchs as players can get their hands on enough to cover their usage but I doubt people are paying cash for bulk amounts of them. Kinda why I feel the drop rates should be released, it would give us a more concrete idea of what something is worth then we can compare it to it's value then have a more universal understanding. Then again, people might just not give a shit and keep using that RMT currency ratio site w/o paying attention to it's advertisement. Finished 17th in Rampage - Peaked at 11th

You guys have also to consider that alchemy orbs are produced pretty fast, grinding with mf gear and selling crap to the vendor.
Several mods on items sold to the vendor gives alc shards. alchemy orbs drops relatively common and they are produced through selling crap to the vendor in form of alchemy shards. In comparison to fusings they are more common, sure 6 socket items and jeweller are fusings too, also alts can be traded to jeweller and then to fusings, but you need jeweller pretty often and also alts for low level maps etc. So its pretty obvious with my reasons i mentioned and the reasons before posted, why alchs are worth less than other comparable orbs. I think the reason is the underestimation of those orbs.
People just dont use them, but still they come into economy pretty fast. I am pretty sure the biggest source are rare items where you get shards from. Orbs of alchemy actually have quite a big use, I dont understand why nobody wants to trade them. 1, If you are strong enough you can alchspam low level maps. In my opinion its worth it, because you get more rares and have a net plus of maps you can sell. This method is extremly cheap compared to alternate orbs for 2 lousy mods. 2, Alch high level white items, there are plenty of them. You have to think in this way: how much you increase your "effective droprate" by using orbs of alchemy. Consider this: you want to get a perfect vaal regalia, chances are highyou will >>NEVER<< find it. However, if you spam white vaal regalias with orbs of alchemy you tremendously increase your "vaal regalia income" and all you need is itemlevel 68 to get a ~95% perfect item. In my opinion bruteforcing with orbs of alchemy is a much better way to accumulate almost perfect gear the most cost effective. The usefulness of orbs of alchemy is heavily underrated! Orbs of alchemy are the best way to craft gear imo. PS.: Dont forget you can vendor 5 rare items for a new rare item of the same type. This essentially means that 4 white items + 4 orbs of alchemy equal 4 Chaos orbs(if you already have a rare item of the desired type) Its probably the best to craft rings this way or recycle them in the chaos orb recipe. Chaos orbs have their usefulness in crafting already-6-linked items |
