I'm not sure. If this game gets really popular, will micro-transactions that give you no in-game benifit really support the further development, server expanding, server management and upcoming game development epenses? I'm very doubtful of this. For the same reason, I doubt GW2 sustainability, even though they charge for the game, they charge nothing more after that, so they really don't gain anything by keeping the players for a longer time, which will impact development of more content. Why should a game like GW2 satisfy players for more than a few months anyway? They won't give you more money until an expansion comes anyway.
Let me be clear on this though, I like the idea of not having to pay for the game and not having a monthly fee and all that, but I don't really see how it's gonna help the game in the long run. Imagine if a lot more ppl start playing PoE then expected - the servers won't hold for it. Where's the money gonna come from to get more servers? Who's gonna pay the upkeet? I'd think the game should be purchased, then the micro-transactions. Either that or just monthly fees, but a free week or two upon creating an account and downloading the game. Whatever you end up making money on, I just hope you make enough to do really really good games and keep em coming.

As another person has pointed out, I think a large chunk of their money will be the players(like myself) who will eventually rent and keep renting a private league for myself and my friends. I imagine there will be more then a few people who will rent servers for them and their friends, and even some who'll just rent them for themselves only so they can play by themselves with no outside interference, or strictly as test leagues for off-the-wall builds.

Combine that with the micro-transactions, and I predict they'll do just fine when it comes to cash flow, as someone else said, Team Fortress 2 has been doing it for years and they make enough to STILL be releasing patches for the game.
As people have pointed out, there are likely two ways they will fund the continuation of the game. I just hope that it is extremely popular and GGG get a good name for themselves so that their next release will fly off the shelves - probably their plan, right?

1. Privately created leagues. Whatever they charge to create your own league with its own restrictions and rules, many people will clamour for this.

2. Micro-transactions: cosmetic items, visual achievements, extra character slots, and anything that gives you, the player, more satisfaction in your play, without compromising fairness and balance in actual communal gameplay.

Can't wait to check this game out. I honestly hope that GGG (3G? G3? Triple-G? G³?) are very successful with the whole endeavour.

uhm, nope.. up until two months ago you had to buy Team Fortress 2, you just had the option to spend even more money on it in their cash shops.
also, it's made by valve, who make so much money from steam that they can do anything they want. not really comparable at all.
still, there are comparable f2p-games that seems to be making a fair amount of money, so im not worried about that.

I know that most people don't want people being able to buy advantages for their characters, but what if you could only buy low quality items of a lower level then your character and you could only have a few such items equipped at one time. The idea is to fill in gaps in your equipment or to quickly try out other item types before you hunt down a higher quality version.
Well the league system is a guaranteed source of income, but other than that, there are so many possibilities:
-Particle effects
-Premium sounds
-Mounts?
-Convenience items
-XP boosts
-Weapon skins
-Armor skins
-Chat room name colors
-Non-combat pets

The list goes on. Neither of these give you a significant advantage over non-paying customers, just a little bit of prestige. You don't have to buy much. A nice skin here, a pet there, nothing major. If everyone just spends a small amount every month, it'll keep the game going. Not counting the people who go crazy about this stuff and buy everything for like 300$.
Seeing as most new online games are going F2P, I think they've got a pretty good idea about what brings the most profit.

They've specifically stated, in multiple places, that they will not allow players to purchase power or game advantage. Things that change the look of your gear have been mentioned, but we will get no actual gear, unless it give no stats/power.
Hope they can make good money even tough the game is free.
