First off, I am an American. Not going to try and hide and then be accused of it later.

I was unaware of a bribe getting us into war. Don't get me wrong about the fact that America should have gotten involved much sooner than it did and allowed atrocities to occur that could have been avoided had they acted with more speed. I had always been under the impression that something like one of our naval bases being bombed got us into the war, maybe I missed something though.

Now I will straight out admit again that we took too long to get involved but then again look at our history and government to understand why. Our country was founded by people who were trying to get out of Europe due to being persecuted for religious beliefs or to make a better life. Then came the American Revolution which as you can guess fostered great feelings of longing to be close to Europe. It wasn't all of Europe that we were fighting against back then, but who ever said that humans are logical. It created feelings of separation greater than the Atlantic ever had.

Then there is the way our government works. Those with power only get to be in power by making large parts of the population happy. So if a large part of the population is believed to be in opposition to an idea our elected officials will avoid that choice for fear of putting their political career at risk. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be an honest man.

Finally, I love how this argument often comes up when people want to debate something and use it as ammo against America, as if America was the only government who didn't help from the start. In fact there are many countries all over the world that never participated in the war at all, and yes I will state yet again that I believe that the US should have become involved much sooner. When people use this issue to attack Americans they tend to act like it was all America's fault that the war lasted longer than 3 days. Life is rarely ever that simple.

Hitler could never have achieved full victory, and would have eventually lost. With or without America. (without would have taken a lot longer undoubtedly)
