Inventory management method is not fun
No doubt there needs to be limits on how much loot a character can carry. That doesn’t mean a player should have to figure out how to pack their limited bag. I have 4 empty spaces but they are “L” shaped and the thing I want to put in is square. Just because every other game has done this doesn’t make it any less senseless. And don’t bother with the ‘realism’ justification. I shoot fireballs and turn corpses into zombies that fight for me. The game is not about realism. It is about fun! There is nothing fun about rearranging inventory items to fit a grid.
Have the limit. I have 30 spaces (or whatever). Some items take up 1, some 4, some 6. Have them in a list of names with icons and the number of spaces. It still shows the details when hovered over with the full size graphic that used to be the inventory place holder. Subtract the number of spaces used by the number available to determine if it will ‘fit’. You could even allow columns of information for a variety of list sorting options. I could then strategize looting and managing what I keep in my bag or throw out. I don’t have to bother about shifting around dented helmets and bottles so I can stick another rusty sword in the bag. I had already thought of some auto-arrange system that would swap items inside of the bag in a way they would fit, so the player would only have to drop the item in there, however what you suggest sounds easier to implement. I like the idea.

One thing I thought D3 really got right was to make items 2 squares or 1 square. No more fighting with your inventory.

" This Diablo (1) style allows very nice high res arts. The only other way to do it is limit inventory space by 'weight'. I kinda enjoy this old-school style, though. ✠ ✠

I think GGG have said they want you to think about what items you pick up and what to leave on the ground. From what I can tell, there are no benefits to this. You're still going to pick up all the good items you see.
I hope they reconsider. I've spent far too much time in this game rearranging my stash and inventory, and it's extremely tedious and pointless. I'd rather just concentrate on actually killing stuff than playing inventory tetris and making 'important decisions' on what to pick up. |

Personally I did not like the D3's iteration of the inventory. Part of the challenge was to maximize the use of your limited inventory space using the grids. An auto sort will just merely stack like items together but wont completely rearrange items to use every grid, that part is still a part of the gameplay challenge for the player to use their minimal tetris skills to create space. Whats not fun is stacking like items manually.

when i played Wow back in the day, there was a mod called Jpack that i always used to order my inventory and bags.
when you activated the mod it arranged all your stuff by sort and then by alphabet. It was awsome to be honest. Simple solution i think and hope the devs will look at it, couse i agree with the Op. Inventory is not cool in Poe. http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/jpack I also think that it would be a good idea to have the 2 lowest rows in our bag, or maybe the two on the left or on the right, sepperate from our armor/weapon space. sort of split window. Purely for our mats and gems. |

Some kind of wallet would free up a TON of space. The wallet is where your character carries all the currency items.
