Convince me that dual wielding with cyclone is a bad idea.

Literally all you get from dual wielding with cyclone is a 10% attack speed buff. That can be considerable, but keep in mind that to get the most out of it, you need two really good weapons. And even then, you're giving up all of the advantages (the really, really substantial advantages) a shield or a meaty 5-6L 2H brings.

Reason why dual wield can give better DPS on skills that don't benefit from DW like cleave does is from the fact how efficient DW clusters are.

Elemental Cleave is nice, but if you go daggers the only options is Dual Strike. It sucks that nearly all skills (like Cyclone, Flicker, LStrike etc) alternate weapons if Dual Wielding. If you go dual dagger on 1st char like me you're fucked.
In case it isn't made clear, shields are good, really, really good. 10% more AS isn't as good. Unless you're immortal the difference is huge/large/humungous/ginormous/tremendous. This is something people in this game actually haven't figured out in the large part, (although with cyclone they have), shields, and especially aegis aurora, are ... big.

I see, I had actually thought the elemental damage applied to both, thank you for correcting me.

The argument here is not shields, stop telling me shields are really good defensively, if I wanted a shield I would have a shield. I don't think anyone disagrees that shields are a better option, defensively speaking, but people who DW choose to DW already knowing this.

Well. It seems that my original argument of mod utility is only valid - if at all - with unique weapons, where mods are actually interesting enough to make it possibly worthwhile. Since most weapon mods are local, and the ones that are global still result in less DPS than a 2h.

So, convince me that I shouldn't run one or a pair of unique weapons with fun mods in a DW cyclone build. That new axe, for instance.

No one is saying it isn't fun. You'd just be wasting a weapon slot which is a big thing
there are a few reason to run DW aside from the aspd, for example having 2X global modifiers like weapon elemental damage or phys lifeleech if you have 2 claws

also if you start as duelist there are a lot of dual wield block/ dual wield damage nodes in the area which lets you increase damage and block without limiting to a weapon type

The only skills that actually let you benefit from dual wielding are cleave and dual strike. Cyclone has no purpose cause instead of attacking twice per spin like you would with one weapon, you attack once per spin with each weapon. This would only ever be useful if for some reason you had EE and 2 very strong single element weapons.

It's just cause Cyclone hits mobs twice. If you're using one weapon it hits it with that one weapon twice.
If you're using two, it hits the enemies with each weapon once.
The only advantage to dual wielding at that point is 10% more aspd.
If one weapon is weaker than the other weapon, then your dps drops compared to using 1 weapon.
