Possible change to how Chromatic orbs work?
|
I'm extremely disappointed about how Chromatic rolls on armor work. I would much rather they be completely random than certain colors being favored depending on the type of armor being modified.
I feel like this really kills certain esoteric and fun builds due to needing literally hundreds of orbs that you otherwise wouldn't use. I'm not complaining that I need more orbs to change armor. I am however, pointing out how blatantly broken it is that you could use over 300 orbs on one piece of armor and still not get a certain socket color for no other reason than using the armor most suited to your build/class. Call me a whiner, call me bad, whatever. I don't feel like this system promotes more fun, off-the-wall builds. Instead, I think it discourages them and tries to coerce you into playing the way the class is generally stereotyped to be played. TL;DR I don't think socket colors should be favored based on armor type. This thread has been automatically archived. Replies are disabled.

I don't agree. A Marauder will; 90% of the time have a str-gem based build. If it's completely random how his sockets roll, it will be almost impossible to obtain a good 4/5/6L armor, with only str sockets. Something that i want to add however, is that it's unfair that one of the strongest support gems (increased elemental damage) is restricted to a strength socket. On my Burning arrow ranger it makes a difference of 250 DPS (550/800), and it's HARD to obtain anything with a strength socket.

I guess I see your point. Maybe something like increasing the likelihood of sockets of different colors. I literally just used 3 stacks of chromatics and got 2 red sockets (not at the same time) out of all of them on the armor piece I'm trying to upgrade.
To me this is beyond the point of bad RNG luck, these are statistically impossible standards they have set. Edit: Before captain obvious inevitably comes in this thread to tell me "dud brah chroms r easy 2 get", I know that. That does not mean, however, that it should take twelve freaking stacks to get just TWO red sockets on a 6 socket item, disregarding links. Last edited by malarix1222#2939 on Aug 12, 2012, 4:34:16 PM

iiq, iir, multi proj, mana leech, increased duration, chance to ignite, weapon ele damage are just some examples i can think about of support gems which their current attribute aren't intuitively representative of what they do, or gems that could have a different attribute and still make as much sense. Since the ultimate goal of 4, 5 or 6 linked sockets are to heavily support a skill i believe that the colour of these sockets should be less biased than the first one.
the use of support are also about creativity so it's unlikely that an item will gain value by doing a "good" socket colour role unlike with links or number of sockets, since ideally everyone should be looking for different combination. Which make me believe that making certain colour combination should be made easier to obtain or maybe i don't realize how much fun the chromatic slot machine is. P.S. white sockets :D |

" That's what I was thinking about a while ago.. I think some of the more universal support gems like IIR, IIQ, Reduced Mana Cost, and Increased Critical Strike Chance should be colorless since they can fit in 90% of all builds currently in existence. Seriously, Increased Critical Strike Chance is a BLUE gem, how does that make any sense at all? You generally think of Dexterity builds being more based around crit, yet the Crit Strike gem is an intelligence based gem. Sometimes I question GGG's logical thinking skills. |

"Critical strikes are associated with intelligence in all of PoE. They represent the ability to intelligently target weak points, etc to hit smarter, not harder. That association is at a very basic level in the game. The critical strike support gems, skills and passives are int because that's where they belong, not because we threw darts at the passive tree. Maybe have the atypical colors more likely to drop on a white item than from a chromatic orb, this will make whites dropped on area more valuable while still allowing chromatic orbs to be useful. But if you are playing a unique build you will need to keep a sharp eye out while grinding or trade.

I wish it was totally random than how it is, not that I can't see why rolling chromatics currently works as it does now.

" Shouldn't intelligence increase evasion then? the abillity to intelligently discern enemy movement and attack patterns in order to predict and thus avoid incoming attacks... My point is that by and large in RP games, int = mana and mana based skills, str = hp and melee skills, dex = speed and crit skills. Changing that pattern is bound to confuse players, even if you can justify that change. "the premier Action RPG for hardcore gamers."

Dex has evasion because it is primarily a quality of speed. I find this very intuitive
