favorite 5 anime movies and series :)
For series it would have to be these, in no particular order:
Shiki The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Baccano! Fullmetal Alchemist. It's annoying really, I start so many series but rarely finish any of them. I don't really watch any movies so it's just these: Sword of the Stranger. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is probably my favorite movie ever. I thought it was cool to see all the characters go back to their normal stereotypes. Also how they managed to completely change the tone of the movie compared to the series but still have it be amazing, and how instead of being a kind of comedy that doesn't really have much of a plot it's a sort of love story.
Spoiler
I ended up just feeling sorry for Yuki Nagato in the end, because all she wanted was a normal life with Kyon.
Anyways, seeing as how this an anime thread is anyone else absolutely PUMPED for the new Blazblue anime? Noel and Tsubaki are so Kawaii~ Last edited by Blueclaw#5093 on Oct 8, 2013, 12:53:05 PM

I don't actually watch that much anime, so my list might be a little naive.
Movies 1. Ghost in the Shell 2. Perfect Blue 3. Akira 4. [entry intentionally left blank] 5. Ninja Scroll Series 1. Death Note 2. Trigun 3. Neon Genesis Evangelion (final 2 episodes must be skipped and their existence denied; Ep. 24 is the finale) 4. Berserk 5. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

"Why does everyone hate the last 2 episodes? I'm only up to episode 8 in the show, but can you give me an idea of what the controversy surrounding them is? Is it like the second half of SAO, where it just sucked so everyone denies it's existence? |

"I don't think I can explain it without spoilers. So if you like spoilers, read it; if you like being properly surprised, I'd recommend you just watch.
Spoiler
I think the idea behind Episode 24 was to shock the viewer. According to the lore of the anime, all but one of the enemy have been vanquished, and since there is no way for the heroes to seek them out; they can do nothing but wait. You expect a season finale at the end of the established season (26 episodes), so the next two episodes must deal with preparation and personal drama until then, right? Or if the last enemy does show up, it won't be a fight to the finish; how could it be? Maybe some skirmish, then backing off, dealing with complications, a cliffhanger, and then wait until next week for the thrilling conclusion. Well, the idea here was, surprise, the end has come faster than you thought. It was essentially a psychological ploy to catch viewers off-guard, challenge their assumptions, and really put them in the shoes of the hero: all of this is happening too fast! In that regard, I think it was amazingly successful. When the surprise isn't ruined (as I have here), it really does feel like a dash for the finish line that you're not at all prepared for.
Anywho, the proper and responsible thing to do, if one is pulling such a trick, is to end the series right then. However, the series was still slated for another two episodes, so they did this kind of wacky transcendental high-philosophy stuff on a very low budget and at the last minute. Good chunks of those episodes are real-life photograph stills, non-animated, with voiceover; other good chunks are crudely animated kanji, jiggling in cadence. It's like they took the style of the opening credits of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, adapted it to a discussion on existentialism, and then presented it without irony. Worse yet, it was below-Matrix-grade pretentiousness at best; the series as a whole was about showing, presenting a situation and letting the viewer draw their own conclusions, while the last two episodes were about preaching. I guess some may have liked them, but what is undeniable is that it's in a completely different style, with a completely different function, as all the other episodes; likable or not, it's not the same show in any way whatsoever. It did not go over well. The outcry in Japan was tremendous. A follow-up movie was pretty much forced due to popular demand for an alternate ending; it is a return to the series' style, but has the characters pull incredible 180-degree turns in personality which are utterly unbelievable and which, I believe, are actually amazing trolls on the part of the creators. Given the situation they were put in (being forced due to peer pressure), kudos to them. But I digress. Don't watch the final two episodes. They're bad. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. " Oh, okay. I think I understand why people didn't like it. I assumed it was just an "Everyone dies, the end." ending, and people couldn't handle that and got all upset about it. Given the way the series is going where I'm up to, everything seems hopeless when it comes to fighting. Even if they're winning so far it seems like they're being put under more stress than they can handle, and they're starting to struggle and beginning using all possible resources available to them and still struggling anyways, so everyone probably ends up dying anyways. I'm sort putting off watching the rest of the show until I can buy a DVD Region 4 copy of it, but it looks like that's not happening so I've pretty much given up on that idea. Oh well... |
