What they should really do is, even after the instance expires, the portal still leads to the area in question; similar to how map portals work, a portal to a new instance should spawn you in a random, uninhabited section of the instance, similar to how waypoints are generated.

You know portals never expire right? Instances do. And you can check that time by ctrl clicking on your map while on a waypoint.
