The noun came from the verb didn't it? Because for some reason in relatively recent times (historically) sex in general has been viewed as something which isn't good and proper, it 'perverts' the moral and upstanding person, or some bullshit like that.

So the verb can have sexual connotation (although it shouldn't).

Well it depends what you're getting at.

It may have been sexist of the OP to assume we're all males, but it's hardly sexist for males to talk about preferring to play female characters so that they can look at a female form for hours rather than a male (assuming they're straight).
