Now, in the case of the elephant I wasn't using "possibility" in the metaphysical or logical sense, but in the epistemic sense. Given that, had there been an earthquake or some other event that rendered it possible for an elephant to walk through my room, it would be possible for me to obtain that information and then decide as to the likelyhood of an elephant walking by. As for your box example. While it is true that I currently do not know what (if anything) is under the box. It certainly isn't the case that ANYTHING could be under the box. Further, the fact that I don't know what's under the box is irrelevant. So, going back to the conversation about free will. I will say, that it is epistemically impossible for free will to exist (in the libretarian sense I noted earlier). It is, of course, impossible to rule out the metaphysical possibility of it, and certainly it is logically possible for free will to exist (that is there is nothing in the statement "humans have free will" that is a contradiction). Ah, well firstly i have a problem with saying since there is no knowledge saying otherwise it won't happen. Plenty of things in this world happen without the knowledge of it happening that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. defining reality based on what your current knowledge is a human norm. Everyone's current reality is shaped by differing observations, experiences, and personalities. To base logic off a illogical thing such as a objective reality is strange to me. Saying that anything can't be in the box is based off that type of thinking. Give me an object and i'll see if i can show you an example the box 1 meter by one meter. Part 2 :D I understand what you say about free will, and i can't say it's wrong. But one thing first, we dont have acces to our subconcious, that's not really right, and even if it were, subconcious is ourself, like concious, it's created from our expenriences and it influence our life each moment of it. The choice your subconcious made is your choice. And second, we always have the choice. Of course we are "forced" to choose some by society, environment or everything around us. But the final answer is for us, i can do whatever i want, everywhen, and everywhere but i'll have to face consequences. That's where free will stop. Or with death. I will not talk about god cause i don't think he has his place here ^^. Truth is, we can do everything (possible of course) but society has reduce our free will, at least if we want to stay as a part of it. To finish, i can think of whatever i want. If i wanna kill myself, i can too. If it's not free will i don't what it is ^^. And mental illnesses, like nevrose, hysteria ect, which are expression of ourself are the free will of our subconcious which is not limited by society, everything can happen. For me the real free will is when you can choose if you die or live, if we take that away from you, you don't have free will anymore, for your body at least. For the rest of the time, i prefer say that it's the couple cause/effect which rule our lives, we choose from all possibilities the one we prefer to achieve what we want to do. (and we generally know what it will "cost") Well it can be a really long topic with endless explanations, so i'll stop here. I'll finish by saying that I think that the free will is proper to everyone, and maybe each person on earth got his own definition of free will (if we search deeply of course). I don't think there is a good answer to that, for now at least. But we can approach it. |
