The majority of players lead fairly normal lives. They don't live in basements. Hell, several of the top players have a family and go to work 40+ hours a week.


Path of Exile caters to a very specific niche community. This community desires games with challenge. We're tired of easy games. We like Dark Souls, Demon Souls, AI Wars, Dwarf Fortress, Galactic Civilizations II, Hotline Miami, Binding of Isac, Faster Than Light, and honestly, I really wish I could carry on listing hardcore, unforgiving games. But I can't think of anymore. I know they exist, but it's so damn hard to find them. Basically, we're left with genres which are inherently difficult: Roguelikes and 4X Strategy games. Only a few games outside that niche are challenging enough.

Whereas the list of games that are not hardcore and unforgiving are too numerous to list.

Don't be surprised when this community tells you to go play something else. They're not being mean, they are being kind so that you don't waste your time. GGG developed a game which they wanted to play. If they decide to make it easy, that's on them.


As far as the low population goes, GGG is actually surprised that it's as high as it is. Just goes to show how badly people are craving games with challenge.
