Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

I have a crazy theory about some of the people who don't like the loot system, but it will probably be disregarded as craziness. So I'll keep that to myself.

Lama, you are right. They should've considered what having a name on the timer meant.

Perhaps, they should've just added a timer. No name on it. That way whoever gets it gets it. The time being the same though, based on slowest, farthest, player's ping.

I want to add one thing to your post Lama.

This is a discussion for Default. Hardcore won't change. We will always be here, simply because this game is awesome.

So, the decision is different from what you describe it to be.

Just so you know...

The loot-system is realy bad.

I have 2 chars on 70+ now and i think about to stop playing that game because of that loot-system.

Atm i have some friends i play with (only 2), but when they leave, what should i do them?

Grouping with random people isn't an option for me.
I play because of the loot. Thats my motivation.
In a random group, i dont get any loot, because im am a Range-DD...

So -> no motivation for playing...

GGG, i have realy no idear why you stick on such a real BAD loot-system?
Give us the option to choose what we want!

I also play only ranged lately, and strangely I don’t have any problems getting loot that falls with my name before others get it. Maybe I just have a better connection? ~66 ms latency average-ish. I do always watch what falls and usually try to have 30%+ run speed if possible.

Do you guys think that HC is different? I mean, when I'm running a lv 70+ char in a map with two other strangers - I think it’s FAR more likely that they will not try and take my loot, possibly because we are depending on each other to stay alive? If I get pissed off that someone just took an item I wanted, I could easily choke and decide not to throw a decoy totem or direct fire to help and possibly even kill them if I lead some baddies in their direction "accidently". Just as they could do the same to me, and I fear death much more than losing a good item…

The loot system as is - works fine and provides for many diverse situations.

I have played in groups where everyone grabs what they can as fast as they can - and it can be fun. (At least you know what you’re in for!) Other times I join the "no ninja" games and for the most part, they very rarely have to kick anyone... I also play with friends were we all try and one-up each other by being more generous and have actually gotten into fights about who will take the damn chaos orb that fell when nobody saw the name.

I'll tell you honestly, I cringe at the idea of having party leader options hard coded in the game, and for many reasons –one being that the party leader changes often in pub games, do they adjust the “loot rules” to suit them? Very often, the “party leader” is NOT actually leading the party at all anyway. I like to play the ‘no ninja’ labeled games from time to time also, and I respect the defined rules, but I very much like to reserve my right to change my mind if I find that the people I am with are assholes or not helping fighting or whatnot.

I also have some bad memories of when I play D3 and saw masses of lechers that “kinda-sorta” help fight but were mostly there to follow the better players and just collect loot. (this can still happen in PoE, but you can see it easily and stop it) In PoE I feel I have more freedom and the experience is more immersive having loot be a collective experience. There is suspense, urgency, and something to pay attention to other then just targeting monsters – without short timer- FFA loot I think this game would lose a huge chunk of appeal to me and many other players who have already adjusted to this system.
Well, I am quite fast to click loot in time, but in some situations I can't click on the ground cuz of some reasons, or there is too lag or confusion to do it.

Also there is to fix the gameplay, when too much items are on the ground, and you can't click or see the map sometimes cuz there are too many drops.

I tried all options, but there is not much to do. Entire loot system and loot options, have to be revised to improve the overall gameplay.

There are also too much special effects in party, that make confusion.

Thanks.

This thread seems to prove how divided an issue this is. At least half the players want individual loot or at least more reasonable timers. It sure would be nice if GGG publicly decided whether they will or won't make changes. This isn't exactly a difficult thing to do.

Half? I haven't exactly seen many on the 'con' side in this thread. GGG said already there will be changes, but I'm assuming they are just going to slightly adjust timers to be 1-2 seconds longer or something instead of directly handling the issue.

We turn a blind eye to this thread because we know that something has to be done about looting (not because it's wrong but because people won't shut up about it) and we know that there is much venting to be done.

This was posted on page 630 by a forum mod. They are going to ‘grudgingly’ change the system.

Don't think you can quote what a mod said and imply that it is as if a Developer said it. Developers might have a different view of this thread than the moderators.

He used ‘we’ multiple times in the quote. That indicates that he is talking on behalf of the Devs.

Also when I recently sent an email to support asking for a dev response to this thread I got this reply. ‘It's likely we'll be tweaking this system in the future depending on player feedback.’

I'm sorry for asking such a noobish question since I play solo (except Kraityn killing) but I have to ask:
What do the player see when an item drops?
I assume every player sees a timer, right? What else is shown? Name of the player who can pickup that item?
My (somewhat empty for now) Rampage shop thread: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1014634
Take a look :)

Yes. They see a timer, what the loot type and name is, and the name of the person who it's currently allocated to.
