Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
" I hope they don't move to a fully instanced system. They already said they wouldn't increase the timers because it slowed down progress greatly. I can imagine people will complain about something new with loot if they implement instanced loot anyway. I play this game for the Diablo-like feel to it, FFA loot included. It reminds me of the days of better games. I even tried playing Torchlight 2 the other day and that was just... well not the same. In any way, I like this game due to the vast amount of skills, the huge skill tree and the variety of builds this game has to offer. Also, Cut-Throat sounds great, FFA loot, PKing, etc. I absolutely loved playing Dark Souls and the whole invasion thing was great stuff. |

" Why was progress slower? Was it because people were waiting longer to take loot that was nominally given to someone else, or was it because people were actually killing everything and then took a few seconds downtime on occasion to sort through a giant loot pile? Or was it because they had some genuine social interaction to trade around their nominally assigned loot for stuff they could use better? In any case, it sounds like our loot system is going to stay half-assed for the sake of the illusion of cut-throatness. Yeah, I just can't support GGG's attitude here. If you want to cater to one specific community then that's fine, but GGG is trying to half-ass a compromise between two communities that want to play the game in two distinct ways, and until they figure it out that enforcing one way to play onto a diverse community is just a terrible idea, I'm going to go play Torchlight 2. |

Per the Brian_GGG screencaps earlier:
Timed FFA is not going away. There will be no pure FFA. They're going to increase the timers. No one said anything about instanced loot, so it's probably just as off-the-table as pure FFA is. Look for a Spoiler tag to find the screencap. It's probably still in the ten last pages. Last edited by moikpei#0050 on Feb 12, 2013, 1:52:09 PM

" I'm pretty sure the community that backed this game and GGG's original ideas of the game are larger than the people who are complaining about loot. And yes.. it makes sense to make a new league to move this community from the "Default" ideas/themes of the game. YOU, Sir, won the clueless award for today. You could always just go back to D3 if you're not happy here. |

I read that too moi.
Problem is, the timers are already too long in team play. |

One of the things Brian said was something like "we'll be looking at how long each different thing is timed for."
I notice a lot of people who come into the thread to describe a negative experience, they specify that they lost what would have been their first unique to someone else. It's possible that they could be reducing the time on commodities and magic but extending the timer on rares and uniques. That could result in a net increase to game speed given that the total restriction time used in a map would drop. Ex, instead of 10 commodities delaying progress 10 seconds, they give it a half timer and the 10 commodities only end up delaying 5 seconds. Same thing for blues. Drop it from a second each to half a second each, you put five seconds back into the potential progress pot. You now have ten seconds of potential progress you can allocate to the one rare that will drop in that same timeframe. Balancing that part could be what's making the fix take so long. You can't just say "all commodities are half-second timers" because then people would start coming in complaining about losing what would have been their first regal or exalt to someone else. |
|
" So... you're blazing through the game at mach speed right now? They've already said they toyed with increasing timers and said that it wouldn't work out. People who wanted the look would have to wait 30 seconds for the timer to end just to pick it up while the rest of the group moved on. " Screen caps a few pages before. "Brian_ggg: Swagand: very very unlikely that it'll every be purely FFA, but we will likely adjust timers, and what things get timers" I think they're being indecisive about what to do about loot since they did say before that they don't want to increase timers, but say they want to now. I feel in the end they're going to try to please everyone which will end up making people more upset. Seriously, you can't please everyone all the time. |
|
" Oh, they're keeping timed FFA? Well that's fine with me. I must have read that wrong then. Strange though they've suddenly decided to increase the timers when before they said increased timers would slow down progression through areas. I honestly don't see what people are complaining about though. Loot is already semi-instanced, I've never not had enough time to get to an item that gave me reserved time to pick it up. I've also played as each class while doing so. |

" Sure, getting a character through normal is pretty easy and quick, once you hit Cruel and Merciless though you can't just rush through that. That's also part of beating the game as well. Level 1-40 isn't the whole game pal. My information is lost in the sea of threads for the moment. After they began locking all of the other loot threads that popped up and made everyone stick to this thread, the other loot threads have sunken into the depths of the forum pages to rarely ever be seen again. I do clearly remember that Chris mentioned that increasing the timers would slow down group progress quite vividly though. Believe me or not, it doesn't matter to me. Also, they didn't mention anything about extending the loot timers per say, they simply said they're "adjusting" them. That brings about a plethora of possibilities of what they're doing with timers. I'll give you a situation in which someone would leave behind an item. You're partied with a Witch and a Ranger using a wand and bow. A rare two handed axe drops and you're playing your two handed axe marauder. You've been looking for a new axe for a while now and this one has just the right sockets. Oh no, it's for the Witch, she passes it and acts like she doesn't care one bit. You're stuck there waiting 30-40 seconds to pick it up while the rest of your group has moved on. You just lost out on a bunch of other loot/currency you might have been able to get because the timer was 30-40 seconds too long. You then come to the forums to complain about the timers being too long because you were away from your group trying to get that axe when an exalted dropped for you and the Ranger picked it up. Nothing. Changes. |
