Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
" We've seen even some pro-FFA loot supporters say that they would likely use an instanced loot option if it were available. Why? Because people, when given the option, take the path of least resistance, and instanced loot would be down that path. Last I checked, the path of we exiles was riddled with nothing but resistance. Just because people would use an option doesn't mean they should be given that option. You want to guarantee your share of the loot? Play single player, or play with people that you know will honour such a system. You want to team up with complete strangers out in the lawless wilderness? You better believe it's FFA loot. Welcome to the jungle. I guess I'd be more sympathetic if it was hard to get loot in this game, but it's not hard. Worst case scenario: ID and vendor a bunch of blues until you have 64 Orbs of Alteration, then trade up to an Orb of Alchemy at Clarissa - and that's assuming you NEVER got ANYTHING else, no other orbs, no good rares, nothing (which doesn't happen). I could see a couple of seconds being added to the timer, but D3-style "your loot is your own!" instanced loot should never be an option in PoE. |

" That's why there is a thing called balance. Balace it up so that the chance to get items in instanced is the same as singleplayer. That way there is no unfairness or advantages in instanced. |

" That's not correct, and you made a strawman argument at the end. Bad form. In many online games, there are PvE and PvP servers. In PvP, other players can kill you. So why would anyone join a PvP server? To be able to kill other players. That is why people would still play FFA; not to run the risk of being ninja'd, but to have the opportunity to do it to others. It's not my cup of tea, but some enjoy it. I say let them. And with the same breath, I ask that they let me play the way I prefer. They lose nothing by adding my option, as I'd never join an FFA party anyway. In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.

If there was an option to play instanced loot then that would ultimately make FFA groups more competitive and "cutthroat" and more fun because then everyone in the group would be in on it and everyone would be there to grab as much loot as possible. That sounds a whole lot more fun than the current confused situation where it's mostly okay-ish to pick something that dropped for someone else up, but not really, and you don't know if you will annoy or upset people if you do what the system encourages you to do.

" I think that whole "more fun" thing is only forum argument. They just want bigger share of the loot... Last edited by Dishonor#0049 on Feb 8, 2013, 10:39:54 AM

" Except that the whole "we're exiles, it's dangerous" lore is woefully inconsistent. Currently, it's "Stealing from others is ok but murdering them is out of the question." Does that really make it dangerous? No. It just allows you to be a consequence-free dick, by not helping kill for the sake of your own greed. Does that sound like an exile struggling to survive? No. It sounds like a very safe thief haven with unrobbable shops and an unrobbable vault that can be visited whenever the thief likes. Doesn't really sound like a life 'riddled with nothing but resistance'. In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.

It's pretty simple, i've been farming a lot these past few days and there are STILL a LOT of fights occouring between the players on a party. The so called "ninjas" are hated by most, and there must be a SIMPLE way to end this and make everyone happy. The "adrenaline" that was supposed to exist runing to pick up an item before it's FFA does not exist AT ALL, it is in fact just an unconfortable thing to do that makes most people just go solo instead. Either change the time to pick-up the item to maybe 5-10 seconds or make it ONLY pickable by the player who dropped it.
Whatever you do, just change the way it is right now. As a ranger, most of the time I don't even see the item dropping because i'm atacking from the other corner of the screen and not seeing 10% of the monsters I am hiting. Thank you. |

Yeah, the only "cut throat"(or whatever you call it) element is FFA loot, so you can't defend FFA loot by saying that the game is cut throat so it fits. It's a circular argument.
Too many logical fallacies from the pro-FFA camp. |
