Bots and Botting

Honestly yes I have no idea on there stand for botters. But being F2P and not having 13 billion dollars behind them they simply cant take the Blizzard approach to this game it will simply destroy this game from the inside out. There playerbase is gonna be VERY important to them it would be in there best interest to keep them happy. Letting this game get overrun by bots like D3 is right now is not something they can afford to do.
botting is annoying but lot of em will try to hack accounts.

it's way way more efficient.

secure your account will be a big big thing!
Actually now that you mention that its a very good point. While botting may not be a big thing in this game with all the randomized stuff as I stated before. The account stealing thing could be pretty substantial in this game. Most F2P games yeah not so much but PoE is a tad different in the fact that every single piece of gear in the game can be worn and then sold all over again when done with. They could potentially make alot of money stealing accounts and selling the gear off. So make sure you keep your account safe people. And dont say authenticator you dont need that crap for a safe account.

I would like something like an authenticator. Perhaps something built into the game like Steam Guard.

It has been proven throughout many MMOs that simply having a good password isn't always enough.

PoE is relatively safe password wise though.
Some botters have revealed that the way they 'hack' D3 accounts is by simply hacking D3 fansites and otherwise D3 related places. Quite a few people use the same password for multiple types of acounts, and the security on those sites is generally very low.
PoE doesn't really have fansites or anything like that, so it's not affected by this approach.

That said, this site does need to be well protected of course. ^^

If there's botting going on and a black market won't really affect most people in a game like this. Only the extreme players will use it and the rest won't care. I played D2 for years without ever buying anything for cash and was successful and happy.

What is of paramount importance, however, is to not allow the chat channels to be spammed by botters as that does have a direct impact on the average player.

I don't think the average player cares about botting, they just don't want it in their face all the time, harassing them and preventing them from using chat or other game features.

Also duping. Duping and chat spam are unnaceptable.

Ask a simple question everytime a user logs in or ask to write a code shown on the picture. Only takes 10 seconds or less but stops bots from logging in.

And if a human logs into the account then turns on the bot, what good would that do?

For those saying random area generation will discourage bots...probably not. I played Runescape for a very long time (up until October last year, actually - I quit because the company, Jagex, went to the dumps and became money-grubbing assholes) and nearly maxed my character (legitimately training to 90+ all but 3 stats which were in the high 80s). I stuck with that game for quite some time and saw its ups and downs. In any case, they released a skill called "Dungeoneering" which would generate a random dungeon of up to 64 Rooms, iirc. The rooms would be randomly connected and have various monsters/puzzles inside. Not long after its release, people had already begun botting it.

Also, I've seen 2 characters with very bot-like behavior up in Merciless. One was a level 2 character (probably got there waypoint hopping with an alt/buddy), the other somewhere in the 50s. I'm not quite sure what they were doing, but I saw them consistently running from the stash to Greust in Act 2 for the entirety of the day several days at a time. It's been a while since I've seen them, but they never did respond to messages or anything; just the same repetitive bot-like behavior.

Unfortunately, bots are a reality in any online game. I don't have enough experience with them to say how to stop them (especially as I've never been one to use/make them), but captcha codes during gameplay (perhaps while changing zones, for example) work relatively well. The downside is, of course, it is a minor annoyance for legitimate players. Autotalkers which spam advertisements to 'goldfarming' sites are pretty aggravating, but easily stopped by in-game chat moderators.

Yeah I also played D2 for a good chunk of my lifespan so far lol. As far as the botters go yeah big deal dont care about them at all. I have no interest in buying there gold or orbs for this case in point. But the chat spam is a big deal is utterly annoying. But I also think you will find when this game goes open beta/live you wont see a ton of players frequenting the default league. The simply fact that this game has customizable leagues created by players alone alot of people I would wager are gonna spend most of there time in those leagues anyways. Im not positive but Im also pretty sure that those leagues are gonna have player moderators for the chat of that league given as tho they are paying money to make those personal leagues to begin with. As far as the duping goes im pretty sure there gonna find a way to do it my question is how is the devs gonna handle that if and when it does happen.
