a) You absolutely do not need to PJO a skill just to try it out. You can evaluate a skill with 4-5 supports and decide if you like it enough to invest in the final socket.

If you go back down to a 5-link you are nerfing yourself. You could also be at a point where you "need" that 6-link. Possibly you are trying to take down a T4 boss and whatever skill isn't cutting it. Maybe GGG decides to nerf your skill. It doesn't matter what the reason is you are nerfing yourself by swapping skills.

I didn't mention coloring because it is entirely irrelevant and a small annoyance at worst. There are multiple ways to make coloring sockets easy. I actually just swapped between heavily red and heavily blue sockets on a Necrotic Armor 3-4x in Phrecia and each time it took only a few minutes.

Worst case sceanario would be a melee build that uses Cloak of Flame but wants 5-6 red sockets. In this scenario you would probably buy a few omens then hit with chromes till 3x white sockets and a good combo for your remaining colors. You would then hit it with a harvest white socket till you were good. This at most will cost you 6D outside of some horrendous RNG. Then you never need to color the item again while you would still have to 6-link each new skill in PoE2 at 4d a pop (what I saw them posted at in 0.1).

They need to remove the 6-link from the gem and make it to where you turn the UI hole into a 6-link.
