To use steam charts as an indicator on an early access game makes no sense at all.
The famous Last Epoch than most of the negative karen are suddenly praising as an example.
Release February 2024: 258 000 players
First league July 2024: 71000 players

Was no doomers crying about it that much and the player count went down by 3.
so does it mean LE is a failure?

POE2 only by 2 so if we follow the online commentators, POE2 is more a success for its second cycle than Last Epoch.

At some point, there are only few games that can sustain the same amount of players (live service), moreover POE2 had a huge success with mainstream audience, such people often try a game and then quit.
We are in an overcompetitive market with video games.

0.2 at some point only has 1 class and a bit of extra content.
Snapshot now:
Name Current Players
1. Counter-Strike 2 706,016
2. Dota 2 254,743
3. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS 226,764
4. Schedule I 183,519
5. Marvel Rivals 102,616
6. Monster Hunter Wilds 102,058
7. Banana 100,467
8. Path of Exile 2 92,566

Any AA game is dreaming about such result for an early access game with kind of low content update, i would dare to say even AAA games.

Isn't it kind of ironic to start the post with that sentence, and then proceed to use Steam Charts numbers to bolster your own argument?

What this whole discussion about Steam numbers lacks is an important distinction: commercial success and franchise success (you could go with more, but let's keep it simple).

The usual rule of thumb for live service games used to be around 10,000 active monthly players, but that might be off due to higher production values in the past. So let's just go super conservative and say a live service game needs 50,000 MAUs. That makes and will keep PoE2 a commercial success, no matter how you look at it.

The franchise success question is a lot harder to answer because that comes down to a lot of personal factors. I'd say it is only a middling success, with a slight downward trend, simply because the initial hype (550k+ players) did not translate well to returning players.

Making any assertions on retention and trends is still premature though, because it's impossible to say why the players who did not come back did so.
0.2 is more popular then poe1 ever was, has better player retention, and is making the devs more money then poe1 ever has. Keep coping my friends. This is our game now. Wait for 3.26 and play LE.
Im fine with 228k still lost majority of the casual hopefully it goes lower next league

Just wait if they ever remove xp penalties, new records.

at least halving it would be a big boom.

IF there is one thing I agree is nto fun is XP loss.
This post didnt aged well lol. Lets have a look next weak at the retention when Last Epoch comes out, that should say enough.

We are only a week in so yes everybody wants to see if its any good.
The retention will be back on POE2 youll see. I hope not for GGG but iam predictng it will.

so you do not understand business. You know what is the best Gym client? The one that pays but only goes 5-6 days per month to train. As long as he pays that is what matters. THe one that goes everysingle day and stay 3 hours at gymn are considered BAD clients... they eat much more resources.
