this is to do with how items work technically in the code.

I very much disagree with this post.....they can absolutely re-write and re-code an item across the board. They've done it before mid-league, actually pretty regularly. They've even done it on hotfixes that don't even require a game restart. Any changes that have ever been implemented on an item during a league have never required a divine to "update". And they are almost NEVER full mechanical changes, more often than not they are numerical tweaks.

They simply choose not to for the most part because they KNOW people like legacy items. They learned that from D2 and that whole generation of games. There is a huge population of avid "collectors" in these types of games.

It is an incredibly simple program to target all "x items" and rewrite the values. They do it regularly when they re-balance item drops and monster health and things like that. They are able to tweak numbers wherever they want, no matter the size, with ease. And if there is a range of values, they simply assign a rule for each number within the range, to re-roll it to the new value (assuming the minimum value changes). Ex: former range was 10 - 15, new range is 20 - 25 (or higher), all 10s become 20s, all 11s become 21s, etc. 5 lines of code. If the maximum is increased, they don't need to reroll anything.

Perhaps its a greater load temporarily that they choose to avoid, but it most certainly isn't any additional work on their part.

If I had the access, I could probably write a program right now that would take every word "the" across this entire forum, and replace it with something different and it would take effect after seconds, or maybe minutes of processing time. The exact same concept, except probably even more streamlined, exists within the itemization of this game.

Devil's Advocate: Earlier my assumption was that server wipes should be expected. Maybe I misunderstood something recently??

There will never, ever, ever be a "server wipe" that deletes all items and characters from existence. It simply won't happen. GGG has RARELY blinked items completely out of existence. They only do so if the mechanic involved in the item is just totally removed from the game (like Onslaught support on gear). There are a few exceptions of course, but very very very few in a long 10+ year history.

More likely, the characters will go into a voided league, and the gear will just be marked "unusable", kind of like how watchstones were/are. I'm pretty sure the void league thing was explicitly stated by Jonathan in multiple interviews prior to launch and after launch.

I guess we’ll see. I don’t care either way but my expectation is that my EA characters will be deleted when game goes live
Vaal everything in EA for fun because EA instance will stay in EA server and League release will be the restart of everything.

I wouldn’t care much about anything in EA. Just have fun. Learn things, Vaal items to see how it goes and don’t care about anything. I wouldn’t myslef buy a unique that has been vaaled but have great stats.

Nah they've already said multiple times they'll go to their own EA realm. Like it doesn't really matter as no one is going to login to their old EA chars the second we get a league. By them time release comes around most ppl will have deleted them just to not have 15+ chars on the selection screen.

while that is most certainly true, there are probably an equal amount of people that will save (and currently have) hundreds of characters, or even never delete any characters that reached a certain point of progress.

Speak for yourself. Provided our toons get to receive all the same content/balance updates, there's zero reason to start over on a new server.

can you give any actual examples of this?

thats completely different data bases tho. they can change the values of a monsters damage cause thats just being pulled from a central data base for monsters.

the database where ALL existing items are stored, every item in everyones stash and character since the beginning of the game is a gigantic data base and if it gets corrupted this is massively bad news, this is essentially the entire game, everything everyone owns. they have posted before that its really dangerous to mess with that.

edit: to be clear here, theres a set of values for a Slitherspitter, every time one is spawned it pulls from that one entry. on the other hand there are 287,396 individual instances of a particular unique across 20 million accounts in a database containing billions of individual items.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

This will be hard to solve, without a crafting table. But you know their "vision". They don't go back on core decisions like this.

Adding an auxiliary use for divines will also feel very artificial.

I guess they can only change what a divine does fundamentally so people will use them.

WTH, you never ever played any of the 40+ leagues before?

Why abandon my toons? If new content is available, I can enjoy it with the characters I have when its released or simply create another one in the environment I'm already playing.
