Why dedicate my time if I can lose all my XP with a death penalty?

All the exp penalty does is make it even more tedious and annoying. There's no skill involved anywhere, so it's not really an "achievement". Just shows that someone spent X hours doing the same monotonous activity over and over. Pretty much the same as any grind in an MMO lmao

Bro got filtered so hard he lives on the forums complaining all day about everything that is preventing his own enjoyment in the game be removed. Even though the vast majority like these things

You are in the minority

Surely the "vast majority" enjoy these penalties. That's why there's so many threads popping up about both exp loss and 1 portal per map right? That's why they have 90% of people saying "+1" and agreeing while the other 10% just keep defending these mechanics for no reason. Surely.

You're the one in the minority. Checkmate.

Yeah, no. The people who enjoy the game are in game. I took a 2 week break from the toxic forums because I couldn't handle all these people whining and complaining about every little thing.

But yet here I find you. Still living in the forums because you got filtered so hard. I've been in game. You live on the forums. You are the vocal minority.

i was more put off by the first time i tried a boss map and got one shot, the boss (the only interesting thing) was removed from the node. i'm happy to bash my head against a boss and lose an entire level worth of experience in the process, but one try and now i have to do more tedious grinding to search for something fun to do? nah, i'll just reroll.

This is exactly how i feel. I'm fine with losing a full level throwing my corpse at a boss.
I dont want a pile of corpses to kill the boss though. I want to die, learn, improve, and overcome the challenge that killed me before.

Edit: I would be happier if i didnt lose a full level, but hey i'd trade my exp gains for more fun in game.

Got to 50% @95 and decided to finally do Xesht...back to back did T1, T2, T3.... and I died to T4 I think 6 times and went back to mapping and looked at my XP bar and said "Oh, well it was worth it."

GJ self- reflecting and decompressing. You can end it there but chose to come back and be toxic. Amazing. Might require some more time off imo.

What the definition of a challenge for you then ?

Content that you die to regularly.

A Boss should take three to four deaths to see and understand all its mechanics, then another half dozen to learn how to execute everything near perfectly to bring him down.

Maps should always have the possibility for sudden packs of mobs and rare spawns to overwhelm and kill you. If a normal player (not the top 10% or the bottom 10%) can regularly go 10 maps or more without dying, the content is too easy and needs to be rebalanced.

But the death penalties prevent the devs from creating this type of challenging content. So instead they have the "challenge" of plodding through hours of maps where nothing will kill you. Where you are over-geared and over-leveled to avoid risk, to finally reach max level.

Lol ok. Someone PRO-ONESHOTS here !

I don't need to die to feel challenged. Getting occasionaly hit for 75%+ of my ehp and relying on pots to heal back up is enough.

What you avocate for seems like the most terrible game design ever.

After playing Souls like games, Metroidvania games and roguelikes without level as a progression indicator... the conclusion is that Exp penalty is a silly childish tool.

Elden Ring we loose runes, but is so easy to collect and farm that after some thresholds is insignificant to gameplay experience overall. We can try beat Malenia or Radahn Consort so many times that deaths are fun. We learn each time.

Celeste... lol... I lost how many times I died on Bsides, was fun as hell.

Hollow Knight... the Pantheon is sick. Please Team Cherry where is our Silkgong?

Cult of the Lamb... until today I can't rach that deathless boss achievement, but is cool to sit and try now and then trying different fleeces, weapons and strategies.

PoE 1/2... errr gets boring easy.

Ironically enough, we can see your forum post and at no point was there even close to a 2 week break in between any of them. Please go be toxic somewhere else, it's not welcome here.

No, I don't think I will.

That's losing experience. You just have a different outlook when it comes to Souls-likes for some reason. You've accepted that the maximum level is realistically unachievable for you, and you are happy to play at a lower level where you can still be challenged.

This is the real issue. We don't have the opportunity to bash our heads against interesting bosses until we learn, adapt, and overcome once the campaign is over.

It is achievable... is just time consuming. Everyone can sit at Mohgywn Palace’s overview killing Albinaurics all day long until reach the 99 at each stat. Is just boring, not worthy or needed.

We can beat the game at lvl 1, naked... challenge runs revolves around it.

I agree!

And it has nothing do to with Exp penalty. The one portal issue is the most absurd offender.
