Why dedicate my time if I can lose all my XP with a death penalty?

" I second this. I play Path of Exile not because of some league, tournament and/ or some challenge someone created at an office, but just to create builds and kill mobs. These parrots that repeat that Path of Exile is about achievements and/ or overcoming is dog-water. Path of Exile is a numbers generator, the closest thing you can get to a gambling machine. I think the game could benefit from a mode where it has no death penalty at all. Like, like I'm not sure about others, but time is a very valuable resource, and I'm just looking to play games with friends. Shoot, a real Path of Exile 2 experience for someone like me would be more interaction with players while killing mobs. The limited time I see people is trading, and 80% it's just bots. People always say Path of Exile is like Dark Souls would argue it's not even close. Dark Souls teaches players how to overcome by interacting with hand-crafted environments and/ or well-thought mobs. Death happens, but very limited on penalty. Path of Exile is a number generator that designs things on the fly, wasting your time for some reason if something goes wrong, and people say it's an achievement if you somehow become overpowered. I know, dumb. Path of Exile 2 needs some changes towards the death penalty. I really think a new normal mode needs to be introduced. Something for the players who don't care about people who try to do some random-numbers leaderboards like it's 2013 or whenever it started. |

I just wish GGG will have a say on this, whether they decide to keep the xp penalty or not. This is by far, the most talked about topic on the feedback forums.

" It's the most talked topic because there is an issue with the current state of death penalty. 10% of the level is too hight imo, as you can go back in your progress. A clever suggestion i read on other topic would be to just loose the xp of the current map. So you can try difficult content without loosing progress. Or at least reduce the amout or set it to 10 % of the progress in the current level. |

" The first suggestion would be the best, it will be close to souls-like without the chance to retrieve back the xp you gained on that map. But at least, you don't loose hours of grinding because of it. But to be honest, I don't think lvl 100 is game breaking at all. It just provides people to have a milestone/achievement when they are grinding. If pro xp penalty folks are worried that people will just don't care blasting away to grind, remember that there are other punishments currerntly applied as well -- you will lose juiced up maps, nodes, fragments you used on pinnacles.. lvl 100 is NOT the end of things in POE, as the main point is to grind the gears. But at least give players an easier access to achieve this milestone, instead of 1% of players who do at least 10 hours a day of POE. Players will NOT stop grinding after reaching level 100. |

So the "Race To 100" is the reasoning given in interviews from what I've seen.
POE2 is primed to be the biggest and best ARPG ever made, and grabbing mainstream audience / the masses. Simple solution to this would be to add a checkbox to the Softcore/Hardcore/SSF selection on character creation: Race To 100 box ticked: Exp Loss + eligible on the board for Race To 100 Race To 100 box unticked: No Exp Loss That way the racers get their race with the intended consequences and drama. Casuals don't lose motivation to play when the exp loss creates that 2 steps forward 4 steps back feeling. I'm at 12-13 days /played 93 Monk, and I've essentially lost all motivation and addiction (to the betterment of my life, sure). The amount of b2b deaths from bullshit like ground aoe I can't avoid, on death effects faster than 1 frame, off screening, server lag slideslowing when opening a breach, ritual tornado in a hallway and the other 10-20 bullshit things going on and reported in this post and others... Getting 1-shot with 5-6K HP pool (life/ES/Mana with full resists inc. 85% chaos). It's just too much for negativity and frustration for not enough reward now. |

You bozos cant handle the heat, go install D4 then. We ve had death penalty whole of poe1 and its never going to change because again i trust chris vision and that they cater to you people that have 5 wifes and only can play 1 hour a week and youre just bad at the game.

" The hardest enemy in the game is lag. 1. Increase the waystone tiers to infinite adding more modifiers or higher rolls on the dogshit etc. 2. Let people opt into the Race To 100 / Leaderboard at character selection adding the exp loss. Difficulty available: Infinite. Players losing motivation to play due to exp loss: Minimized. Player Choice & Agency: Increased. Race To 100 Players: Treated like athletes, lorded by whole player base. Overall Satisfaction Of Players: Increased. Also notify players like deaths in Hardcore when racers are reaching new levels post 90 with their current position so the whole player base is passively "watching" it, enticing more to join that league or next. Maybe on a server level but with global top 3 so it's not too many notifications etc. |

" Pretty lousy counterattack. “It's always been that way and we should keep it that way because “traidition”. POE1 players should perhaps realize that their game will appeal to a broader mass in 2025 and thus appeal to new segments of players/customers and develop accordingly. And relying on factors in a NEW game because they were in the OLD game is the most boring argument ever. The game appeals to several customer segments and GGG should design the game accordingly. A switch to turn this penalty on/off would be cool. As a new POE player, I'm not even trying any anti-meta builds because of this penalty. I have no interest in losing too much EXP because I consider the time I invest in the game to be valuable and I want to get value out of it. Ergo, I look at the best builds, play them and I'm done. I take the path of least resistance. But if I didn't get frustrated with losing exp to death, I would feel freer and more at ease and therefore more willing to try new things. Basically, GGG is sabotaging itself by allowing players to realize the full potential of the game's possibilities. |
