way too many skills are just unplayable on controller

Like title says, controller is just unplayable, the targeting is soo bad and focus to prioritize important stuff. Not a single aoe skill that isn't aoe or cast on yourself is just straight up not working properly. All skills that requires to setup something then blow it up somehow just doesn't function properly.

Right now I'm trying a frostbolt + cold snap build. It genuinely doesn't work unless you're in town without a target.

You advertise for controller but 40% of the skills are unplayable on it and the other 50% works but it's too goofy and you will lose dps by playing it on a controller.

I'm playing with a controller and I have no issues. The targeting could be a bit better but it's fine. Cold Snap automatically picks up frozen enemy even in a group.

Here's a little tip: Put spells you want to "aim" on the back buttons so you can hold your right stick and press the buttons at the same time. This way you can steer the aim to a specific enemy or group and aim effectively. Also if you are running away from enemies, the auto-targeting will usually readjust to the closest enemy.

On the mercenary they made his skills auto-bind to back buttons on the controller for this reason.
playing on xbox instead of pc. Controller feeling so much better.
i agree. the hardest boss in the game right now is the auto-aim feature.

Yes, when there's a frozen enemy, however, cold snap doesn't prioritize your frostbolts, so, if by any chance there is an enemy somewhat in front of you, then your cold snap doesn't target anything at all and just doesn't work.

I had a similar issue on my ED contagion where it would cast contagion on a mob an then ED 180 degree in other direction.

Same thing for frost bomb, you want to somewhat predict where it goes but nope, on controller, it goes somewhere. Want to focus a rare down, too bad, controller decided you will target that random white mob 50 meters behind.

Icicle shot from crossbow who get a bonus damage if the icicle is left on the ground for more than a second requires you to strategically position your icicle then bait monsters into it. Controller just targets the enemy directly preventing the skill from functioning properly.

Smart targetting also got a boner on the bell from quarterstaff and will make you untarget something just to hit it, even if you actively using your right stick to target away.

Again, list goes on. I'm sure if I tried more stuff I'd find more unplayable things.

Melee is the only viable option on a controller

Exactly this. I've died to bosses simply due to the adds spawning, and even though I point my right stick at the adds and away from the boss, my character keeps facing the boss and firing my abilities at IT, not the dozen enemies eating me alive. I've even placed myself BETWEEN the boss and the adds, and end up facing 180 the direction my controller is aiming.

REALLY strong auto-aim.
Similar thing using the monk's bell on controller, I'll be running away from the bell towards a mob that's clearly highlighted and i'll 180 and start swinging in the direction of the bell.
Implementing mouse and keyboard support would make this game so much better
Controller support definitely needs some improvements.

We should be able to adjust auto aim for each skill individually and ideally to be able to use same skill with multiple targeting settings. Like, on one button you set Leap skill which will target closest enemy with usual auto-targeting and on other button you map same Leap skill which is set to no auto-target and instead used with max range to use it as mobility\escape tool.

There should be more options for auto-targeting priority, like prioritize rares, or frozen, or primed for stun, etc. Also, choose which stick to prioritize when you auto-taget - right stick is convenient when you play ranged class like Mercenary but when you play melee for example it's not very convenient to use right stick to adjust your melee attacks, why can't I just aim with my left stick instead? You also can't use face buttons with right stick so you're left with only 4 buttons for skills which requre aim correction with right stick.

While system like this would be probably kinda convoluted it should help a lot for controller to be fully functional.
I am so glad that poe is a pc game with controller support and not a console game with a poor pc port.

Use keyboard and mouse then - thats what it was designed for. You do have the option to play on controller, yes - but it was optimized for M+K
