I got ridiculously excited given the stories in the topic, and was let down when I looked up a lets play on youtube. Not entertained by screen scrolling dos games anymore sadly. If this was an rpg of sorts with a multiplayer aspect I'd be all over it...but I was expecting something different. :(

So if its Ascii text its ok that it can complex, but you'd qq about POE? Point taken.
Also off topic. Mods and devs are all on reddit now. POE is a constantly evolving game, so expect balance changes, buffs and nerfs STILL! Last edited by THEHORNEDRAT#1516 on May 3, 2013, 7:40:53 AM

No one was crying, I was bringing up the fact that Angband is basically the same game (The first diablo was based off moria, its predecessor) and it has almost infinite replay value. There are lessons to be learned there.

" Modern ARPG's are so completely divorced from their roguelike roots that "learning lessons" from them would require a complete re-design. The only ARPG (that I know of) that is remotely roguelike is the original Diablo. From D2 onwards they've been something entirely different. Last edited by jiussa#5776 on May 3, 2013, 9:57:44 AM

" I dunno if we mean exactly the same by the term roguelike, but i find a great pleasure in replaying the Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas games still, even though i thought the gameplay style of Fallout 1 and 2 were better in some regards, because you have the freedom to mostly do whatever you damned well feel like, like just straight up killing people who want you to do quests for them, pickpocketing of course, and not to forget having intercourse with various characters, or even mutating or becoming crippled and stuff like that :] But i do agree that generally ARPGs have definately moved very quickly towards the almost entirely linear gameplay style of quest->quest->quest->quest->boss->quest->quest->quest->boss ect. only interspersed with optional farming on the side and very few randomized events or encounters, if any :s If anything, these are the sorts of improvements i think GGG could make the most headway with in terms of attracting a wider playerbase and vastly improving the replayability and entertainment value without it interfering with their visions of a dystopic type of anti-heroic adventure into a socially and magically hostile land. |
