Isn't chance to ignite wasted on firestorm? Burn damage doesn't stack and is based on the amount of fire damage dealt, and the damage of each individual fireball in firestorm is pretty low (20% effectiveness).


I don't use it for the actual damage, but for the chance to ignite causes certain mob types to flee while on fire....

Not too sure about this... AFAIK the area is increased with no decrease in the damage done to each monster in the AoE. So it may look like the meteors are farther apart, but I believe that they are all taking the same damage.

I base this on when I am Firestorming an area with jars in it, the jars break when no fireballs were shown to have fallen there.

Concentrated Effect is a must in my opinion. The radius of the fireball explosions doesn't compensate for the spread between them, at least not in my experience. Plus you get a ton of bonus damage, since it's an AoE spell (Conc. Effect is a huge "more" modifier (multiplicative)).Oddly enough the skill seems meh as an AoE tool and very strong as a single target spell. It's much better than people give it credit for. Obviously it's outshined by Freezing Pulse in most general cases (what spell isn't, honestly?), but I use it on a fair number of my caster builds.

Iron Will if you're a high STR caster - that much should be obvious for just about any damage spell. Culling strike is nice as others have pointed out.

Personally, I like Faster Casting and Increased Duration. Why? If you can cast the spell at a faster rate than it takes for all of the fireballs to fall, you'll get multiple instances of the spell dropping in one location. This makes up for the fact it's mildly inaccurate (extremely inaccurate without Concentrated Effect), causes a rather satisfying visual effect, and adds up to tons of damage. The 15% Increased Skill Duration passives near Ranger are pretty nice if you can afford to get them.


I wouldn't use it for burns. Burns don't stack on top of each other, they queue up. The strongest burn takes precedence, and in most cases the others go to waste. Since you're hitting for tiny amounts of damage per fireball (but a ton of fireballs), the burns are going to be weak. The only use for this would be if you wanted to use it as a "flee" spell. In other words:

Firestorm
-Chance to Flee
-Chance to Ignite
-Concentrated Effect/Knockback/Blind/Culling Strike/Some other filler


People have mentioned the damage effectiveness is low which makes "Added Damage" supports not so useful - this isn't strictly true. While the damage effectiveness does modify the damage from those supports, you have you remember that each fireball that hits an enemy will have added damage from the support. So if you have 100 damage added in that way, each fireball will do 20 damage from supports alone. If 5/8 (the base amount on a non-quality, non-supported Firestorm) fireballs hit, you've gained the full damage. With Conc. Effect, it's not uncommon for this to happen.

I decided to go with Faster Casting, Increased Duration, and IIQ. Increased Duration is a no brainer for this skill IMO, but the reason why I stopped using it was because the framerate of Firestorm is bad, so I don't want it screwing up my FPS even more with the whole screen filled due to duration. Well that was before I did the config file trick. Figure I'll deal with whatever else is leftover, since duration is so good on this (80% increase is a lot).

May I ask how you will support this, mana wise? Over 100 mana cost with that setup I think. And I have a lot of mana regen, like 92.

Concentrated Effect is just too mana demanding IMO, and this is my only attack besides my minions so I want it more than just a single target spell. I actually have decided to take off Increased Duration in favor of Item Rarity for the mana costs and framerate increase (a little bit), and like I said above, I have 92 mana regen with Clarity. That's pretty high I think.

So instead of a boss killer, I have a magic find spell since I have dual magic find on it now with Faster Casting. Ideal would be Faster Casting + magic finds + Increased Duration in a 5L. I realize though that the only purpose of a 6L for Firestorm would probably be to add in mana leech. Without it, a 6L would be pointless due to mana costs. Anybody using a 6L and are fine? How?

Who said firestorm sucks? WOW. I remember using firestorm linked to increased
crit (and thats it... 2l) and mopping the floor with merc mervail while being
an ice witch, with a 4l FP and no fire damage passives at all...

Now i'm way above that level and mervail dies easily to FP and frostbite
but before? I didn't even bother using my primary 4l FP, rather my unpassived
2l firestorm... so vs ice immune? firestorm ruins folks. a great free skill
for an ice witch to use when things dont die to ice.
Firestorm is the best skill for concentrated effect. The reason being that firestrom will actually increase in damage with less area (not talking about the increased dmg% from conc effect), due to the fact that the amount of balls of fire that drop does not decrease based on area, therefore there will be more balls of fire hitting the same target multiple times. I also believe firestorm with conc effect is the highest single target dmg in this game because of it. If you have never tried it out, you need to.
